Zero's POV

My head was swimming as I carefully sat up off of the cold, stone ground. It would have been completely dark if it wasn't for the soft glow coming from behind me. However, the small bit of light wasn't strong enough to illuminate an area large enough for me to understand where I was.

"Doctor," I called softly, hoping he was nearby.

"The Doctor isn't far from here," a familiar, gravely voice came from behind me.

I whipped around, adrenaline rushing through me, only to find the light source.

Art stood with his face completely devoid of expression. His golden eyes glowing softly.

"Art," I gasped. "What the hell? What are you doing here?"

"I am not Art," Art spoke in a monotone voice.

"What are you talking about?" I demanded, panic beginning to spread through me.

"I am Voice Interface. I chose the form of a close friend to ensure comfort and trust," He said, his voice lacking any and all emotion.

"Yeah," I scoffed. "Because I feel really comfortable after falling off of a ten story building into the chasm of bloody Tartarus!"

"This is not Tartarus."

"I know that!" I said angrily.

Voice Interface stayed silent for a moment and stared at me with emotionless eyes before finally saying, "We will locate The Doctor." And then he began to walk away.

I followed him, my footsteps echoing loudly while he didn't make a sound. "Where are we?" I asked quietly.

"You are in the Machine."

"What does that mean?" I frowned.

"You are The Key. And you will end all things," he replied.

"And what do you mean by that?" I demanded.

"Zero: The key to the end of the Universe," Voice Interface stated flatly.

"Oh," I spoke softly as realisation dawned upon me. However, this feeling was quickly followed by overwhelming dread; This is what the Timelords had prepared me for. They trained me to see through perception filters and all sorts of other ridiculous things so when someone figured out how to end the universe, I wouldn't give the information to do it. So, would I be able to accomplish what I was trained to do?

We walked in silence for a moment, and I soon realised we were in a rapidly narrowing corridor. Rusted, metal pipes snaked along stone walls. And after that it didn't take me long to notice that we were traveling down a slight decline.

"Why are the walls closing in on us?" I demanded, panic invading my voice.

"This is your first test," Voice Interface answered in monotone as he abruptly stopped.

Confused, I turned to see why. "Bloody hell," I swore softly as I saw the stone wall that ended the corridor.

Suddenly, the sound of tumbling rocks followed by a much heavier object echoed through the dark.

"You have thirty seconds until you are crushed by a large boulder," Voice Interface informed me. "I am a hologram, so I will be undamaged."
