No answer.
Hastily, I begin to scroll through my phone for Alex's number, but just as my finger hovers over his name a notification pings across my laptop screen.
'That Girl' has uploaded a new blog post.
Lolita.
As I scan down the page my eyes widen, my jaw slowly dropping. Is this Lolita? This ranting raving stream of consciousness? What does she mean, goodbye?
My heart sinks.
My phone rings and my heart rises to my throat as I hope for Lolita's name. But it's Alex again. At least he might know something...
"Alex?" I answer eagerly, hoping to find answers. Everything from earlier melting into insignificance at the thought of...
"Amy," he breathes loudly and the panting gets quicker as if he's running, "Amy- she's- I mean she's..."
"Alex have you seen the blog post?"
The panting increases- I can hear his shallow breaths as he wheezes.
"Alex if she's still posting she's- around..."
The words catch in my throat before I can utter them.
"It's not about- um- me- is it?" He asks sheepishly.
"What?"
"The post? Is it about what happened? It's not that? Is it?"
My heart bangs against my chest like an incessant drill. What has he done? What did he do to Lolita?
"Alex, I don't know what you mean, but you need to tell me now."
He takes a sharp intake of breath that's so audible he could be standing right next to me.
"Not on the phone."
"Where?"
"Meet me at the park in five?"
The park. Not there again. I almost say no, but then I picture Lolita's glazed eyes when I last saw her.
I owe her that much.
"OK, see you in five."
