I was walking back to my apartment in Detroit while the cold winds whipped my hair around. Each time the wind blew it felt like my skin was being burnt from the cold. I had the cold numbing feeling in my nose and the air felt thin. I've never had winter, that I can remember, in a cold place before so I was still making adjustments. I was born in Worms, Germany, which is a cold place, but I left there after about a year and a half. I was adopted by a couple that lived in Tampa, Florida that couldn't have children.
About five years ago they died in a car accident and ever since then I've moved all over the country trying to find a new place to try and start my life. I tried New York, California, Texas, South Carolina, but no matter where I go I can't seem to find a place that works for me. My parents were always so good to me, they never mistreated me and they always cared for me. Before they passed they paid for me to go to college and now I have a masters degree in computer science. Finding a job hasn't been a difficult thing to do, just finding a place where I want to live is the challenge.
South Carolina was too relaxed, New York was too busy, Texas had too many bugs, California was really great, but I didn't feel like I belonged there. Or anywhere really. When I moved to Detroit I don't really know what I was thinking, I've been here once or twice before so I guess I wanted to try something different.
I've lived in Michigan for about 6 months so I feel fairly comfortable with all of the roads. I've made friends, I even had a boyfriend for about two months, but he just turned out to be an asshole. He cheated on me several times and expected me to just take him back. People have hurt me before and I don't like it. I forgave him, but made it clear that I would never date him again. That made him upset, he wouldn't stop calling and texting me for a while, but I guess he gave up.
It was about seven so it was already getting dark. While I was familiar with the streets at this point I'm not comfortable with walking the streets, alone, and in the dark. I needed to stop by a gas station and get a Mountain Dew. I know it's so bad for you and goes against everything I'm for (Food wise), but it really was my guilty pleasure.
I was walking out of the store when I saw Caleb, my ex-boyfriend. I sighed and started walking into the opposite direction.
"Hey! Rose!" He ran up behind me and grabbed my arm. "I've missed you baby, why are you still ignoring me?"
"Because I just don't want to be near you. Can you just leave me alone? And get the hell off of me." I tried to shake him off, but he had to tight of a grip. I tried to push him, but he just tightened it to a point where it caused my pain. I dropped my bag along with my phone and drink. "OW, Get off of me!" I cried out.
All of a sudden he released his grip, what had stopped him? I heard another voice, "Hey! She said to get off of her! Now fuck off." I guess whoever said it really scared him because he ran away. Who is he? The voice sounded familiar, but I couldn't put a name or face to it and I wasn't about to find out.
'Hey, are you-"
Before he could finish his sentence I grabbed my stuff of the ground and started to run towards my apartment. Even though he was nice enough to help me out he still scared me. I felt like he was following me, but I didn't want to take the chance of turning around and having to speak to him.
It didn't take long to get to my apartment so once I did I slammed my keys on the table.
"Who was that guy?"

The next morning I woke up at 5:45 and went to take my shower. I had to be at work at 7, but I did get to leave at 2. After I had dried my hair and straightened I walked down the stairs from my apartment. It was about 6:35 and my office was only ten minutes away so I thought I would leave early and grab something to eat. At the bottom of the stairs I bumped into someone, they were tall, and I could feel they weren't a woman by their build.
