Chapter 15

TORI'S POV

"Peter Carlile?" Austin and I stood up, walking over to the doctor. "Please follow me." We nodded and followed him to his office, both of us sitting in the chairs across from his desk. He sat down and cleared his throat, looking at us with a sympathetic look.

"So, it looks like his injuries didn't cause too much damage which is good. After doing a few tests, we did notice something. Does anyone in your family have Marfan's Syndrome?" Austin stood up and left the room, slamming the door behind him.

'I'll be right back." I said with a small smile to the surprised doctor. I walked out to see Austin on the ground, bawling his eyes out. I sat next to him, wrapping my arms around him and trying to calm him down.

"Why am I cursed with this fucking disease? Why are my fucking kids cursed? What if Belle gets it?" He sobs.

"Listen, we don't even know how bad he has it. Maybe he won't have to have the surgery until later, or at all! Let's just go back in and find out, alright?" He nodded, wiping his eyes and standing up, pulling me with him. We walked back into the doctor's office and sat down.

"I have it." Austin simply said.

"Alright, well it looks like you have passed it down to your son."

"But, we got our kids checked every year and the doctor's never saw a problem with him!" I exclaimed.

'Well, sometimes this disease shows up at birth, and sometimes it takes a while for it to show up."

"Yeah, I didn't find out I had it until I was seventeen and we didn't find out about Ariel having it until she was four." Austin said.

"How bad is it, does he need a surgery?" I asked.

"I'm guessing you guys have gone through this before?" The doctor said with a small chuckle and we nodded.

"I had the surgery around twenty years ago and our oldest daughter had it when she was four." Austin said.

"Well, he is going to have to have the surgery soon, like within the year. It's not too bad, but it will progressivly get worse."

"Could we push the surgery to the summer? Just so he doesn't miss school."

"Of course. We'll have someone come talk to you later about scheduling his surgery. Did Peter show any symptoms?"

"A week ago, he felt dizzy when running and passed out while lifting weights in gym. Over the course of the week, he had been feeling dizzy when he was walking home from school so we sent him a note to get him out of gym and we made him ride the bus home. Today, he was getting beat up in school, had a panic attack, got pain in his chest and abdomen and then passed out."

"Okay." The doctor said, writing it all down. "That definatley sounds like Marfans. Just, limit his salt intake and monitor his excersise. I'll send him a note to get him out of certain activities in gym for the rest of the year. No weightlifting, no running and he can walk but barley. He needs to avoid doing too many sit-ups, too many push-ups, things like that that might weaken his heart. I'd say at least for the rest of the year, meaning December, put him on this diet, watch his excersise and keep a close eye on him. If he gets anymore pains in his chest, stomach, or gets a fever, keep him at home and if it lasts for two hours or more, get him to the hospital." The doctor said, handing us a slip of paper.

"Thank you doctor, but I have a few more questions. Would we be able to get our youngest daughter's heart checked out here, just to see if anything's going on with her?"
