Chapter 29: Sophomore Year

Peter's POV

*A Month Later*

"Peter, come on bud, time for school." My dad said, knocking on my door frame. I groaned and rolled over. "I'll be back in five and you better be up." He said, leaving without closing my door. I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling. Today was my first day of sophomore year and I was terrified. Since my surgery was during the summer, I haven't faced my bullies and have yet to be beaten up with my improved heart. I was worried I would get beaten to a pulp and almost die on the sidewalk again. It's bad enough my own girlfriend won't make out with me. I don't need anything else bad to happen.

Ever since I had my heart attack, Brooke won't give me more than a peck on the lips. I think shes scared to hurt me again, but I'm healed and I just wish she could see that. Basically, summer was pretty brutal. I'm grateful our dads made up and we hung out a lot once I was fully healed, but like I said, only small kisses. Hard to feel the love through small kisses.

I sat up and pulled myself out of bed. I walked to my closet and pulled out a pair of jeans with a band shirt. I pulled them on and ran a brush through my hair. I pulled on my Converse and walked down the stairs.

"Good morning Peter. Breakfast is ready." She said, placing my plate on the table.

"I'm not really hungry." I said. I was way too nervous to eat.

"Peter Carlile. You know you are on a strict diet. You can't just skip a meal."

"Fine!" I groaned, dragging myself to the kitchen table. I sat down and forced myself to eat.

"Thank you." My mom said, taking my empty plate. Just then, there was a knock on the door and a smile spread across my face. Brooklynne.

"I'll get it!" I called, running to the door and opening it to see Brooke's beautiful, smiling face. "Hey baby." I smiled, pulling her into a hug.

"Hi love." She said, hugging her back. I gave her a kiss and tried to hold it but she pulled away after a few seconds. "You ready to go?" She asked.

"Yeah, let me just grab my bag." I said, picking up my backpack and hanging a strap on my shoulder. "Bye, I'm leaving!" I called out into the house.

"Wait!" My mom exclaimed, running up to me. "Don't forget your lunch." She said with a giant smile as she handed me a brown bag.

"Ugh, how long do I have to keep taking a lunch? I already get bullied enough."

"You know you need to stay on this diet until at least the end of the year." I sighed and grabbed the bag, stuffing it into my backpack. I slung the other strap on my shoulder as Brooke and I walked out of my house and down to the bus stop.

"I'm sorry we can't walk anymore." I said, looking at the ground.

"It's okay, your health is way more important." Brooke said, putting her hands on either side of my head and tilting it upwards so she could place a kiss on my lips. Again, I tried to hold the kiss longer but she pulled away. We talked as we waited for the bus, and when it got here, we made sure to sit in the very front seat since all the bullies were at the back. The bus ride was uneventful as we arrived at school and hurried off to avoid the guys at the back.

"I have to drop by the office to get my elevator key." I told Brooke.

"Okay, I'll go with you and then we can get our schedules." She said as she grabbed my hand. We walked into the school and I b-lined it into the office, not trying to start my day with a beating.
