Chapter 20: Surgery

PETER'S POV

*One Month Later*

"Come on Peter." My dad said as he turned off the car. I took a deep breath and grabbed my bag, sliding out of the car. I was tired and hungry, not a good mix. I had my surgery this morning so I wasn't able to eat anything. It didn't help that I had to wake up at five in the morning. But, all well, I guess I'll have plenty of time to sleep after my surgery, right?

Honestly, I was really nervous about the surgery. My parents just told me the basics, so I researched the surgery and... some of it scared me. Some people have actually died! But, I guess it isn't that surprising, it is heart surgery after all. But, it does calm me down a bit that my dad and my sister had it with no complications.

My sisters came with my parents today, Brooke said she would be here later. I was just hoping I'd be able to see her before I went in for surgery.

We made it into the hospital and my dad told the four of us to sit down while he went to go check me in. He came back over with a clipboard, sitting down next to my mom and beginning to fill it out, asking my mom a few questions here and there.

"So, today's the big day. How do you feel?" Ariel asked.

"Nervous as hell." I admitted.

"It's okay, everything will be fine." She smiled, kissing my cheek. "Love you bro."

"Love ya sis." I said, pulling out my phone and scrolling through Instagram. Suddenly, I got a text from Brooke.

"Peter Carlile?" I sighed and stood up, following the nurse through two big double doors. She led me down a couple hallways and up about three floors until we got to what was going to be my recovery room after surgery.

"There's a gown for you to change into on the bed. You can just place your bag in the corner, any questions?" I shook my head. She smiled at me and left. I placed my bag on the bed, quickly undressing and pulling the hospital gown on. I stuffed my clothes into the bag and threw the bag into the corner, climbing into the bed. I pulled the covers over me and sat there, sighing. I really didn't want to be here, but it's for the best.

The nurses walked in a few minutes later and started sticking needles in me, connecting me to various machines. Soon, the doctor walked in, followed by two men and my parents.

"Hello Peter, I'm Doctor Bates and I'll be watching over you in your recovery. This is your surgeon and anesthesiologist." They introduced themselves to myself and the anesthesiologist began to talk to me.

"I'm going to come back in about five minutes to start the anesthesia." He said with a smile. I nodded as the three men left.

"I'm so proud of you Peter, I know this is scary." My mom said, hugging me and kissing my forehead.

"I'll be fine mom." I said, faking a smile. I was extremley nervous. She pushed the hair out of my face and smiled, walking away. My dad walked up and hugged me.

"I'm proud of you son, I promise the surgery will go fine. We'll be right here for you when you wake up."

"Thanks." I said. After my surgery, I was going to have to stay in the hospital for up to ten days and then I could barley do anything for about six weeks.
