"And what can I bring you cuties?" Mary, our usual waiter asked as she pulled out her small notebook from her pocket and a pen from her hair.
"Umm the usual," I smiled then looked at Paul who was already looking at me in disgust, "What?" I smiled knowing that he hates it when I order a burger and fries.
"Can I just get some fries Mary, please?" Paul pulled his usual charm. As usual, Mary blushed and nodded then walked to the small kitchen behind the counter. I looked at Paul and laughed at how dumb he could be sometimes.
"What?" He asked oblivious to what just happened.
"Nothing." I smiled then looked at my hands. I felt him staring at me then turn his attention at the group of girls who walked into the diner. I looked up and saw how interested he was in them, I couldn't help but turn around and realise how pretty they were and why Paul was staring. I sighed and turned my attention to Mary who was dancing in the kitchen to inaudible music due to the juke box playing some Chuck Berry. Right when I was going to snap Paul out of it one of the younger girls came over to the Juke Box right behind us. Paul tapped his fingers on the table then got the courage to turn around
"You like Rock n' Roll?" He asked trying not to look so nervous.
"Yeh." She looked Paul over then shifted her attention to the huge juke box, she gazed through the long selections of music until she found one she liked, "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis blasted through the loud speakers making me jump a bit in my seat. Paul smiled at her then turned back and watched Mary struggle to hold her platter full of food,
"Here you go sweeties" she sighed as she struggled to put our food on the table but managed to do so.
"Thanks Mary." I managed to put a smile on my face but Mary knew it was all just an act.
"Talk to me later." She mouthed then walked over to the group of girls to take their orders.
"You know eating that junk won't do you any good Sheila." Paul groaned as he stuffed his face with fries.
"Shut it." I joked as I took a huge bite out of my burger never breaking eye contact.
"Grody" He teased.
"Shut u-"
"Hey, Paul right?" The same girl from the juke box cut me off as she say down next to Paul.
"That's me." He replied as he wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
"So my friends and I are going to see a flick after school, care to come?"
Paul looked at me and he gave me a look but as he was about to say something I decided to butt in,
"You should go, it'll be fun." I fake smiled, again.
"Great! See ya."
"See ya, Dot."
When she walked away I couldn't help but look her over, she was petite and pretty. How could Paul even think of saying no?
"We should be getting back..." I sighed as I looked at the clock. We still had 15 minutes left but I just had to leave this place, it was giving me weird vibes.
"So early?" Paul gave me a puppy dog face.
"Yess Paul, so early." I said as I left some money on the table but only to have it pushed back towards me. I looked up at Paul who just shook his head and put some of his own money down. I sighed, I've always hated when people pay for my stuff but I'll let him slide this time.
As we slowly made our way back to school Paul tried to stop me a few times to ask if I wanted to ditch, I obviously kept lying saying I had a huge test next period and I couldn't miss it.
"I'll be right back." I said as we walked into school. Instead of responding back Paul followed me all the way to the restroom and leaned on the wall next to the door.
When I walked inside three girls were in front of the giant mirror fixing their bumps. Luckily there was no one in the stalls because in this school girls cared more about their hair than anything else.
As I made my way into the medium sized stall I locked the door behind me and leaned on the wall making my bag slip off my shoulder and fall onto the floor. All the memories of Paul and I came rushing by like a wave making my hands fly to my face and try fight back the tears that wanted to burst out.
You see, Paul and I never dated but it always felt like we were. He's always been so sweet to me and when people ask if we're a thing he would occasionally say yes making me turn red and hide my face. Paul has put up with me through my bad and annoying times, he's heard almost all my secrets and I've heard most of his. There's times when I feel like he likes me, but now that this girl is here it's been so different. I mean, he met her like what? Three days ago? And she's all he talks about now.
"Hurry it up in there Sheila!" A familiar voice complains."
"I'm sorry!" I struggled to open the door
"Woah Shei are you alright?" Joyce, my first best friend murmured as she pulled me out the stall, I quickly grabbed my bag trying not to lose my balance.
"Yes I'm alright just got something in me eye Joy" I rubbed my eyes.
She clicked her tongue, "Sheila I know you, what's really wrong."
I didn't say anything and just looked down at my shoes.
"Nothing I'm serious. Can I go now?"
"Okay fine but we'll talk later..." She said as she let go of my arms and let me walk out the door to Paul.
"Jeez Sheila did you stop by the pool?" Paul joked looking forward and not noticing the pained look on my face as we walked.
