"Here, put this on. It's your special day today, and this is perfect for the occasion," mum said, placing a silver tiara, studded with blue diamonds, on my head. This was the tiara which I received on the day that I was born, but I had never worn it before. Being a Hamid, I was considered a princess, so the tiara was in order to portray my identity.

We had come back to Farshad's country for my wedding. Ideally, the wedding would have taken place in our country, but because mine and Umniyah's weddings were on the same day, we had to come over here. Umniyah had hired hair and make-up ladies for me who had come to the hotel we were staying in to dress me up.

It honestly scared me to think that once I was married, I would permanently be settled here, while my parents and siblings would go back to to our home country.

"How do I look?" I asked mum and Asiyah, who were both standing behind me, as I looked at my reflection in the mirror.

Mum dabbed her eyes with the heel of her palm, as she placed her hand on my shoulder.

"You look beautiful, Aliyah. MashaAllah. I always knew my daughter was beautiful, but I never knew that she was just this beautiful," mum said. Mum hardly gave her children compliments because she didn't want us to get big-headed. Arif and Asif were naturally already a handful when it came to that.

"Aliyah, you look gorgeous, MashaAllah!" Asiyah said.

"Thanks," I replied.

They both said Allahumma baarik laha, so that I do not get affected by hasad.

"Keep reciting Surah Falaq, dear. It will save you from evil eye," mum advised.

I was wearing a dark blue gown that dad had chosen for me. He had said it brought out my grey eyes and it also matched with the blue diamonds in my tiara.

"We should get going now," Asiyah said, checking her phone for the time.

"Yeah, your dad and brothers have already gone to the mosque. The nikkah should be in an hour. Your dad hired the hotel's taxi, it's going to take us to Umniyah's house," mum said.

I started feeling jittery all of a sudden. I couldn't believe this was actually happening. I was going to go to the Abdul Swamad residence, where Umniyah would be, while mine as well as Umniyah's nikkah would be said at the mosque. All men who were invited were to go to the mosque and all ladies were to go to the Abdul Swamad residence.

Mum helped me tie my hijaab loosely around my head so that my hair would be covered but the hairstyle wouldn't get spoiled. We left the hotel room and took the elevator which took us down to the lobby. Mum sent Asiyah to enquire about our ride while she stayed with me.

Asiyah came back, following a middle-aged man, who told us that he'll drive us. He took us to a car, and the three of us all sat on the backseat, with me in the middle. Umniyah's house wasn't too far away from the hotel, which was a really good thing, because throughout the ride, my nerves were on edge.

I felt way too nervous. I looked forward to getting married to Farshad. Finally, I would get a chance to have him. To make him mine in the halaal way. But I knew that marriage wasn't a joke. It was a bond involving responsibility, sacrifice and compromise. I knew I had to be prepared. I was nervous because I hoped that everything would go fine for me.
