"What did you say?!" I heard Umniyah yell.

I winced and pulled the phone away from my ear. "Calm down, girl. No need to shout!" I said.

"Why in the world did you say yes, Aliyah?" Umniyah asked, her voice filled with exasperation.

"Well, he said he liked me for about five or six years. And he seemed like such a nice guy. To be honest, I didn't have the heart to turn him down," I replied.

"Aliyah, you're crazy, you know that? You're lucky he realised what was going on in your mind and was nice enough to stop you from making a rash decision," Umniyah said.

"I know," I mumbled.

Umniyah ignored me, as she went on, "and Aliyah, you like Farshad. Can you imagine marrying a guy when your heart desires another? That's like ruining two lives - yours and your husband's. And if Farshad also likes you, then that's three lives you would've ruined!"

"But Farshad doesn't like me. That's the thing," I said bitterly.

"And how do you know that?" Umniyah challenged.

"I just get the feeling," I replied.

"You know Aliyah, how many girls throw themselves at Farshad?" Umniyah began, but before she could continue, I spoke.

"Exactly my point. If so many girls throw themselves at him, what makes you think he could ever like me?" I said.

"I wasn't finished. Stay with me. So many girls throw themselves at him, and he hates it! Then there's you. You are one of the only girls he's met who doesn't throw herself at him. Heck, you don't even look at him, you always lower your gaze. And you're so beautiful. There's no reason for him not to like you. And by the way, when I mentioned to him that its your graduation, and I asked him to accompany me, he didn't even protest, he just agreed. That is surely something, Aliyah because I know my brother. He doesn't give in so easily, and I know him well enough to know that he wouldn't agree to go to a graduation of any girl!" Umniyah said.

It took me some time to process all that she had said, but somehow, I wasn't satisfied, yet I didn't tell her anything.

"Whatever, Umni. Anyway, you don't need to worry, I'm not engaged to Mahmoud," I said.

"No actually. I do need to worry considering the fact that you might repeat what you did here with the next proposal you get!" Umniyah said.

"I won't, because I've told my mum not to arrange any meetings without asking me. I said yes to Mahmoud because mum had arranged the meeting, and he turned out to be such a nice guy who had liked me for years, so I couldn't find it in me to turn him down. But I won't agree to any meetings any time soon!" I assured her.

"Okay. Remember Aliyah, what we agreed? Two years. After my brother is done with his PhD, I'm talking to him about you, and get this straight, whether you like it, or not!" Umniyah said.

"Alright! Fine!" I muttered.

After chatting for a few more minutes, we hung up. Honestly, talking to Umniyah just made me wonder if what she said was true. But no, it couldn't be. Farshad couldn't like me. He didn't like me. Even if two years later, I wondered how she would be able to convince him to send a proposal for me. And has she considered the fact that I'm in a different country now? Perhaps Farshad and I were never meant to be, and perhaps, Allah knew best that it may be in my own best interest.

Farshad's P.O.V

"Umniyah! Why did you call me here when we met like 3 hours ago?" Farshad groaned.
