A year had passed since Scott got away with murder. Immediately after last year's Purge, Scott's life began to fall apart. Depression sunk in deep and took control of his life. The lack of energy in his life affected his work and eventually got him fired. A change in employment meant a change in his life status. Losing the house wasn't that big of a deal because he couldn't take entering the kitchen every day. Even though the scenery changed, Scott and his daughter, Sarah, carried the scars of their past with them wherever they went.

Sarah's blonde hair slowly returned at the roots as the rest was hidden under the darkest black dye she could find in the store. She put up a wall with her headphones to drown out any sounds that would come from Scott's mouth. They mostly communicated through hands signals and head nods. She was angry and didn't know how to release it. The color black was a way for her to mourn, but she wasn't healing. She was furious at her dad for taking her mother away and never gave in the justifying his actions.

Scott was the only family Sarah had and there was nowhere for her to run. She closed herself off and just went along with his actions. Her only comfort came at sitting back and watching her dad's life fall apart around him due to his actions a year ago. She found joy in his suffering. They both floated through life together suffering together but worlds apart.

Losing his house also meant that they lost their protection from the chaos that the yearly Purge brought with it. Their new house didn't have the safeguards that their old one had. Bars on the windows and reinforced doors didn't always keep the lunatics at bay. Over the years Scott had heard and seen enough horror stories to make him fear the upcoming holiday. When an opportunity came for him and his daughter to escape any chances of harm, Scott jump to become a part of it. He desperately wanted to gain favor in Sarah's eyes, and he hoped this opportunity would help mend the bridge that he set on fire a year ago.

The opportunity to escape the horror of this night came from an old coworker. A hotel in the city held a raffle, and the lucky winners received a free night stay during the Purge. The Opus hotel was a state of the art building built after the implementation of the yearly Purge. It had state of the art security to protect from the outside violence. Each guest would be secured in their room and released when the Purge was over. All employees were sent home at before commencement leaving opportunities of danger to a minimum. The Opus was a place where non-participants could escape the outside world, be secure, and wait until the surroundings were safe again.

Trevor and Scott used to work together closely on projects at his old job. Since Scott was laid off, they hadn't seen each other since. Scott did think it was odd to see Trevor again, but as Trevor began to explain the Opus hotel, all questioning the visit went away. The sanctuary was too good to be true and Scott didn't want to miss out on the opportunity. Trevor explained that Scott's name was entered in when he was a staff member at their job. Even though he was no longer an employee, he was still able to collect on the winnings. Two confirmation tickets were given to Scott and that was the last time he talked to Trevor.

Leading up to the commencement of the Purge, the Opus and its staff put together a welcome banquet followed by a question and answer period. Scott knowing that Sarah didn't enjoy his company, kept their time together to a minimum. He opted to skip the banquet and wait until the last minute to check in. He did so in an effort to make this night as comfortable as he could for Sarah.

Valet took their car as they arrived outside the entrance to the Opus. Sarah, hidden in the shadow of her dark colors and headphones, walked behind Scott as they approached the doorman. Scott was dressed in business casual in case he had to talk to anyone that he felt he could network with. It had been a while since he covered his khaki pants with his favorite blue sports coat, and they didn't fit as well as they used to. At the entrance they were stopped and their identification was checked. When their reservation was confirmed they were allowed to enter.
