Kayla POV :Talking to dad was nice. It felt good to properly catch up with him and, at least for a few minutes, feel like I wasn't in a fight to stay alive down here.
If only for a minute, things finally felt... normal.
Just thinking about it bought a smile to my face.
Normal.
That word was so scarce down here, I never thought that I'd even think of it. Normal hadn't existed, and it still didn't. I guess I would just have to make a new normal.
"What are you smiling at kid?" Dad asked me as he sees the smile on my face. I shook my head at him.
"Just really glad to see you dad" I say, my smile never leaving. And I genuinely mean that. I couldn't be more happy. The only thing that would make it better is my sisters being here.
"Well, I hope you stay that way" he says, then his face gets real serious, and I know the subject that's about to take place. And as much as I don't want to talk about it, I'm gonna have to.
"You gonna tell me now?" He asks and I close my eyes, sighing quietly as I nod slightly. Taking a deep breath, I start.
"A few days ago, the Grounders were gonna march on our camp. Murphy, who had been captured by them, had just been brought back into the camp after they let him go-" I started, but he cut me off.
"Brought him back in'? Why did he leave" he asked me.
"He made Charlotte jump off a cliff, so they banished him" I said nonchalantly, shrugging my shoulders.
"Oh yeah, your sister did say that. Did they know she was a nut job?" He joked, and I chuckled a little bit before shaking my head.
"Anyway, they brought him in with a virus that was supposed to weaken us before the fight. I got sick first. Then when we finally had a plan to at least slow them down, Sarah got sick, so she couldn't take the shot to blow up the bridge" I say to him and he nods.
"And that left Tessa" he says, catching on to where this was going.
"Yeah. Finn doesn't know what happened because he was getting Raven back to camp. But Sarah went to look for her and she couldn't find her. She was gonna tell me what she thought happened, but the grounders were attacking again before she got the chance" I say as my voice starts to crack. He rubs circles on my back as I try and get my voice together.
"She uh. She was outside the ship when it blasted off. Finn said that she was behind them when they were about to go into the foxhole" I said, my voice barely keeping steady.
"Hey look at me" he says as he he turns my face towards him. "We're gonna find them okay? I don't care if we have to look over this whole damn planet. You hear me?" He said with so much conviction in his voice, a part of me believed him. Apart of me believed we would find them. That they would be okay.
But that was wishful thinking.
And dad knew that. But he had to have hope. Because if he lost hope, he knew it wasn't worth going on any longer. Dad had lost so much. He had lost his best friend, he lost mom, his parents, and now he potentially lost two of his three daughters. He was devastated.
