KINUHA KO ANG REVIEWERS NI SHANEILA SA UPUAN. She left them unconsciously for the third time. It isn't hard to notice her dissociation from her surroundings. Knowing Shaneila, she's a hands-on person kaya nakakabahala. Especially now that I frequently spot her with Jay.
Instead of searching for her in the campus, I decided to return her these papers tomorrow so I could use the opportunity to go to her house and see Andrei—and probably talk to him. Lately, he's been hanging out with either the varsity team or Sab kaya hindi ko siya malapitan.
You can just give these to me sa Monday," she told me while half of her body was behind the gate. Today's Saturday.
"You didn't realize you left that?"
"I didn't. Pero nabigay mo na so yey." She tried imitating a smiley face but failed. I tried peeking behind her to see hoping I could see him but all my eyes could reach was the main door and the tinted glass windows on both sides with the help of the tiny opening she allowed.
"That's not why you're here 'no?" She rolled her eyes. "As usual, nasa plaza si couz. Go."
I nodded and went back to my house first dahil ang paalam ko ay saglit lang ako at ibibigay ko lang ang reviewers ni Shan dahil napasok ko siya sa bag ko nang hindi sinasadya.
"Ma, can I—"
"Yes, dear, you can," she said, smiling. "And don't forget to come back at five for snacks. Magluluto ako ng hotcakes." I paused. This was one of those few occasions where Mom was in her element, cooking whatever crossed her mind. I went inside to quench my thirst when I caught my dad wearing a smug expression. I shot an eyebrow.
"Your mom got promoted," he told me.
Ah, kaya pala. Might as well take advantage of it.
I've been looking forward to talk to him so I could clear everything up. I had my lines arranged in my head hoping I wouldn't fuck these up later. Sometimes no matter how much you practice, when you're in the actual situation, your brain just shuts down and you become a child learning his first words.
"Oy, may chicks dito." Jay whistled, and a voice in my head urged me to punch his infuriating face.
Everyone turned their heads at us except Andrei and Ray. Someone mentioned my name and coincidentally, both of them quickly looked back.
Lumapit ako. "I want us to talk."
"May laro pa kami." He proceeded to dribble the ball away. I made myself comfortable on the nearby bench, and internally cheered for him.
One game turned into two until the Sun was replaced by the Moon in the sky.
I know what he's doing so I stood up with a plan of interrupting them but then Ray whispered something to him. They both glanced at me for a brief moment before he tapped Andrei's back and left with the others. My eyes caught Ray's subtle nod, acknowledging my presence.
"Anong pag-uusapan natin?"
"Galit ka ba?" A dumb question—I know. "Look, I'm sorry."
"Hindi ako galit. Sumama lang ang loob ko."
"That's why I'm apologizing. I'm sorry you had to hear that. It was not for your ears."
