I woke up on the sofa in Fitz' room where I could smell the air was thick with fever and warped with the sound of a wet cloth being ringed into a bowl of water. I sat up on my elbows on the sofa and looked around to where the sound was coming from, but my head ached as soon as I turned my head and caused me to whisper ow to myself. "Woah, steady" The glorious familiar sound of my fiancée said. I took my hand away from my forehead and looked up as Fitzwilliam came and kneeled beside the sofa and placed the cold cloth on my head. He was smiling from ear to ear and his face was slightly flushed with pink and pale patches, a sign that he was getting better quickly.
"Fitz-?" I questioned and lifted my hand to his face to see whether I was dreaming or not before I noticed the sleeve of my dress and realised I was in the same dress that I had publicly accepted his proposal in which was a day ago. "Are you alright? You should be in bed" I said to my fiancée as I swung my legs over the side of the sofa and sat up straight.
"I'm fine, Eve. Seriously" He replied and moved into one knee from the two he was kneeling on.
"I'm not convinced" I told him and narrowed my eyes. "You're still pale and you need to rest and eat something" I said and got up from the sofa rather quickly, to which I stumbled and almost crashed sideways into the desk. But I felt fitz' strong hands around my waist as he caught me and stopped me from falling further. I gasped from the shock and turned my head to look at Fitz who was as smug as ever when he caught me like that.
"Alright now?" Fitz asked as he steadied me back on my feet, but kept his hands on my waist as my back remained facing him.
I nodded and turned back to face the way my body was going, before I took a couple of steps away to get my balance and turned around and looked at him again. I pointed to the bed and gave him a childish but serious expression which showed him that I was serious as I said, "Back to bed. Now".
His response was stupid. "But I don't want to go back to bed..." He began then gave me a smug expression. "... by myself"
I sighed and put my hands on my waist with an eyebrow raised. "I'm going to get washed and changed and by the time I come back with the doctor, I expect you to be in bed recovering" I told him and made my move to turn on my heel and walk out of the room, which is exactly mwhat I did and Fitz didn't say anything against it as he probably knew I was being serious.
As I walked out of the room, I heard a couple of voices around the corner of the hallway and one of them sounded like the elder Cedric. "I can put on a show, George. Believe me" Cedric said to the recipient voice of his conversation as I made my way toward them in the hallway, but I made it obvious that I was in my own world by keeping my eyes down. "Good morning, Eve" Cedric spoke to me quite cheerfully compared to how he spoke to Wickham.
"Oh, good morning, Cedric. Fitzwilliam is awake if you would like to see him" I said and acted as though I was in complete surprise before moving past the pair on my way to my bedroom at Rosings.
It wasn't a long walk, but it was long enough that I was able to stretch my legs without complaining much. My bare feel made little sounds on the bare wooden floors and rugs and if it weren't for the creaks in the floorboards, then nobody would have know I was walking about. But finally I made it to my room and entered through the open door to which I swiftly closed behind me. The room was minimalistic and I had it all to myself unlike the room at Mr Darcey's estate and I preferred it this way.
I did what I said to Fitz I would do: I washed up in the bath, changed my clothes and made up my hair to make it look like I hadn't ridden on a horse all night and slept on a couch for the rest of the day and by the time I was ready, it was almost dinner time so I found a beautiful dinner dress at the back of my collection and tried it on. It was a beautiful white lace dress that I knew my mother would love to see me wear again as I had only wore it once for Annabelle's engagement ball a few months ago. And once I was done, I called for the doctor who lived on the estate and within thirty minutes I was leading him back to Fitz' bedroom which I told him I would do. Walking back across the house this time with shoes on made me feel incredible as I could hear my feet making a noise on the floorboards. I felt like a boss.
When the doctor and I walked into Fitz' bedroom, he had done what I asked of him and stayed in bed where he could recover. He was laying on his side facing the door with a book in his hands and he closed it once he saw that had returned with the doctor like I said I would. "Well, Mr Darcy" The doctor spoke and placed his small bag on the table beside the bed. "How do you feel?" He asked.
"I'm quite hungry" Fitz replied as the doctor placed his hand on Fitz' forehead to check his temperature. But he gave me a wink and I knew that he meant he was hungry for me. I was hungry too, but I couldn't say anything with the doctor present. So I remained standing at the end of the bed where I could watch what the doctor was doing without blocking the setting sunlight.
"Your fever has passed. It seems you have made a full recovery throughout the day, Mr Darcy. Well done" The doctor said.
