I screamed the word that nobody holding a baby wanted to scream, or for their husband to hear but I screamed it and suddenly the entire room became alive with electricity and movement within the bodies of the people inside it. "Zombie!" Was the word I screamed and took off running into the middle of the room where I was suddenly surrounded by the bloody corpse of a pastor and three of the poor people. With my tiny baby in one of my arms, I reached up my dress and pulled out the long dagger that was strapped to my thigh and held it in front of me in defence as the three zombies came at me one at a time. I cut them down with ease, slicing at their legs and stomachs to make them keel over and then I'd stab them in the head and kick them into another one, but one o them grabbed my ankle and bit. I scream in shock of being bitten and my baby started crying from all my sudden movements, so I needed to hide somewhere with her and calm her down. "Fitz!" I cried, spotting him near the doors trying to barricade them with my father and some guards who'd come in to help. My back was hurting, as though I had either been scratched and the gash was large and I was bleeding loads or I was overthinking how hard one of the zombies had grabbed me.
He heard me and looked around, seeing that I needed help and he instantly came running over to me, dispatching two more zombies that were in his way. I always admired how he would do that and come to my side no matter what I needed. "Eve!" He said as he came and kneeled down with me, checking that our baby was alright and then myself. "Are you and the baby alright?" He asked, visually concerned at my shaken state.
"We're fine, Fitz" I replied, touching my hand on his arm to keep him close to me. "What do we do? We can't stay in here forever, there could be more of them" I told him as one of the guards started consoling my mother and sister while my father's back was turned as he stood in the corner of the room with his head down.
"I'm just thinking about it" Fitz mumbled, as he slid his hand around my back and held me like he usually would when he was thinking and I could feel my wound becoming more painful. Then his eyes cast down to our baby in my arms as I continued to rock her to calm her down. Her hands were flying all over the place and he took one of them between his fingers and I saw the comparison of sizes, and it was like he had finally come up with the idea of what we could do. And finally, he looked at my face and like a magnet, I returned his gaze and saw that he was still thinking. "I love you, Eve" He finally spoke, gazing into my eyes deeper than he had ever done before and for a moment, the pain in my back and the noise of the room had disappeared.
I couldn't help but smile and shed a tear as I gazed back at him, my perfect man. "I love you too, Fitz" I replied and made him smile back at me before he planted a loving and passionate kiss onto my lips which lasted a few seconds before he removed himself from me and planted a sweet kiss on the forehead of our daughter. "What was the name you wanted to give her?" I asked him as he stroked the baby's head with his thumb. "Was it Rose or Rosa?" I questioned him.
My husband looked at me as the pain in my back was getting worse and I needed to adjust how I was standing so that I wouldn't fall over. "Rose" He replied, and moved his hand across my back and past my scratch and suddenly his face changed from one of eternal love and passion to fear and uncertainty.
"Then we'll call her Rose" I panted, losing my breath slowly.
"Eve?" Fitz said as I took his arm and passed our daughter over to him. "Eve, whats happening?" He questioned me as I moved away from my family and went to sit on the steps of the alter, quickly feeling myself becoming more and more like i was actually dying.
I didn't want Fitz to think that I was leaving him and Rose and I was surprised that he was kneeling in front of me with her in his arms and a terrified expression on his face. "Fitz, listen to me" I started and beckoned him closer to me. "I love you so much, Fitzwilliam Darcy. And I will be with you forever" I told him.
He looked as though he would cry, and did nothing as I removed his pistol from its holster on his ribs. I placed it beside me on the steps, readying myself for what I had to do so I wouldn't become part of the undead. "No, no no no. You can't - I can't live without you. You can't leave me like this, baby" He came and sat down beside me, holding our baby up so she was sitting on his legs and three of us were closer than ever. I saw my family looking over at us and the look in my mother's eyes made me know what she knew I didn't have long as she could probably see the pool of blood that I was laying down in on the steps of the alter.
"Listen to me, Fitz. My darling" I said quietly, so only he could hear. "You're going to get out of here and you are going to raise Rose. Take her away from this place, from all this death and sadness and tell her always that I loved her. And you" I was smiling so he would think I wasn't in any pain, but the pain I was feeling was more than I'd ever felt before, and it was probably as equal to the pain of childbirth, only in another place. Fitz was crying his eyes out as he watched me speaking to him. "You're going to die an old man, warm in his bed surrounded by our Rose's family and her love"
"We love you so much, Mrs Darcy" Fitz told me and referenced to our baby in his arms.
I reached out to touch her, but saw my hand was covered in blood from where it had been resting on the step beside me, so I pulled it back and took a deep breath, but I still wanted to touch her. Fitz saw this, and moved tiny Rose across my chest in his arms as though I were holding her myself and I smiled and gazed down at her tiny and beautiful face. "You're perfect, Rose Mary Darcy" I whispered to her tiny features on her little head before a tear fell onto her cheek and ran down it like it were her own and I imagined her when she would be a happy child, playing with the guards in the house and making things with her father. I wanted that life for her so badly, but there was nothing more I could do for her now accept watch over her.
"Rose Mary Darcy" Fitzwilliam repeated to himself. And I looked up to him. "I like it" He said with a smile. Then he raised Rose's head to my lips so I could kiss her. Once I had done that, I wheezed with the pain of my wound and settled myself down onto the steps, resting my head on the concrete ground and taking the gun that was beside me in my hand to hold it with my finger over the trigger. Fitz took that as his queue to leave, but as he rose from his position beside me and lifted Rose back up into his arms, the little girl started to cry and extend her arms out toward me. But Fitz kept walking and urged the rest of the people out of the church. He didn't look back as he left, but the last face I saw was Rose's little face and I knew then that I was ready.
