I pulled Daryl back to the infirmary and headed up the stairs. I pushed the door open. "Hey Doc, we're back and I need your help with a little something." I pulled Daryl into the room and closed the door behind us.
Dr. Carson looked up blinking in surprise, before a wide smile spread across his face. "Well sure Delilah. I'd be glad to help. What exactly is it I can do for you?" He played along with me. He motioned for us to sit down.
I winked at him with the eye furthest away from Daryl and he nodded slightly. "Well, Daryl and I have been hopin' ta grow our family a bit more and we stopped usin' condoms right after our weddin'. I'm still breastfeedin' the little one, so I haven't had a cycle since before she was born. But I'm beginnin' ta have some suspicion that we may be... 'in a family way' because of how I've been feelin' the last couple a days. I was hopin' ya could help us out."
Daryl blinked and looked at me in surprise. He reached over and took my hand. "Really?" I nodded and smiled nervously at him.
Dr. Carson led me to the exam table and covered my belly in cold gel. He started the ultrasound that I stopped him from completing the night before. I ended up deciding that I had to have Daryl with me the first time we saw our baby. I had spent the entire night thinking about everything I had been feeling lately, and was almost positive that I was pregnant. I may only be a few weeks along, but we should at least be able to see something.
Daryl held my hand and bent down to kiss my cheek as Dr. Carson began the exam. Daryl looked nervously at the screen as the blurry lines and images changed and came into focus. I knew I would be able to figure out whatever image came up on the monitor before Daryl, and I didn't want to ruin the experience for him.
I kept my focus on Daryl's eyes to watch his expression. Dr. Carson spoke first. "Well, just as you suspected Delilah. You two are having a baby!" Daryl's eyes grew wide as he watched the image move across the screen. A huge smile spread across his face. He looked down at me and I realized he had tears in his eyes.
He put both of his hands on my cheeks and bent down to kiss me. It started out as a sweet, loving kiss, but when I moved my hands to his neck and tangled my fingers in his hair he deepened the kiss. I opened my mouth and pulled his tongue into mine.
Dr. Carson cleared his throat. "I uh... don't want to interrupt the celebration, but you may want to know measurements and due date."
Daryl pulled away from me, but kept his hand on my shoulder. Dr. Carson showed us the measurements and calculated that the baby's gestational age was about 13 weeks. "Wow! I made it through the first trimester without even knowing I was pregnant! So we need to create a calendar for the next 27 weeks to track the rest of the pregnancy."
Daryl couldn't stop staring at the screen. He still hadn't said a single word. "Daryl? Are you ok darlin'?"
He nodded. "That's our baby. We really did it. We're gonna have a baby. Look! There's the heart beatin'! It's kickin' around inside ya Doc! Can ya feel it?"
Dr. Carson printed a couple of photos and cleaned the gel off my belly. I chuckled at Daryl. "No darlin'. Not yet. Probably within the next six weeks or so. Are ya happy?"
He looked at me in shock. "Am I happy? I'm over the fuckin' moon!" He put his hands on my belly and leaned down to kiss it. He looked up at me with a triumphant smile.
I raised an eyebrow. "What's that shit eatin' grin for Dixon?"
He winked and said, "I did it! I put my baby in my woman! Guess I'm just feelin' pretty damn good! Wait. Do we know if it's a boy or a girl yet? Do we wanna know?"
