I woke up with Lily staring at me all wide eyed and anxious. I sighed and kicked the sheets over.
“Hi Lily.” I said annoyed.
“HI LOGAN! Can we go to the beach this weekend?! Can we?! Can we?! PLEASE?!” She pleaded.
“Did you ask mom?”
“Yes.”
“And what’d she say?”
“To ask you.” She said. I sighed and walked out to the kitchen. My mom was reading the paper and sipping coffee.
“So I’m taking Lily to the beach this weekend I guess?” I said to my mom as I reached into the cupboard and grabbed a bowl.
“YAY!” Lily shrieked.
“Oh thanks honey. I really appreciate it. Do you want to take her to Wrightsville Beach? I hear it’s really fun, and pretty close.”
“Sure, why not. I’ll print out directions at school.” I sat down and grabbed the cereal and poured it into my bowl, along with the milk. “Did Lily already eat?”
“Yep, she had oatmeal.” My mom replied. I looked over at my little sister, watching TV. I loved her to death, even if she was annoying at times. I switched my gaze to the clock, 7:12. I better leave soon if I don’t want another awkward confrontation with my neighbor and the open bath robe. I chugged down my milk and jogged to my room. Put on jeans, a hoodie, and my shoes.
“Bye Lil.” I say as I kiss my little sister on the forehead. She gives my waist a hug and then let’s go. “Bye mom.”
“Bye sweetie.” She replies. I walked out the front door and to my car, and turned the key in the ignition. I quickly looked around; making sure my neighbor wasn’t outside. I put the car in reverse and backed out my driveway.
I pulled into my parking spot, and saw Avery’s Mustang already there. Damn, I wanted to get here first. Oh well. I got out of the car, and walked into school, towards the library. I logged on to the computer, and got the directions for the beach. When I went to the printer, Avery and her friend Zoey were walking past, and I zoned in on their conversation.
“Are you going to the beach this weekend Avery? Catch some waves?”
“When do I not go to the beach? Seriously Z, I go every weekend. Josh might come this weekend though. Owen wants to too…” Avery replied. Who’s Josh? Who’s Owen?
“Your brother is H-O-T!” Zoey remarked. Avery rolled her eyes and huffed. “And you should let your boyfriend come! He’d have a blast seeing you surf!” This girl surfs too? Seriously? DAMN!
“First of all, ew, MY BROTHER. Secondly, Owen and I… we’re really not connecting anymore… he doesn’t want to see me surf. He doesn’t really ever support my activities or decisions.” Avery said with a sigh.
“Well invite him anyway! You don’t know if he’d like it or not!” Zoey urged.
“Fine…” Avery huffs defeat. Then Zoey walks away. I glance over at Avery, she looks disappointed, and confused. I want to walk over and comfort her, but I keep my distance. Then I see a guy walk over to her, must be Owen. He sits down across from her, and grabs her hands, trying to talk to her. I see her put on a fake smile, and try to hold her head high. Her boyfriend notices me watching them, and I quickly turn my gaze to the printer, grab my paper, and bolt.
Later in first hour, Mrs. Kellner was explaining an assigned partner project, and that we would have to create a dialogue about going on a trip. We had to pick a place, the transportation, and it had to last 5 minutes. Oh joy.
My third hour was Workshop, and I loved it. My partner was a guy named Ben, him and I talk a lot and we became friends. I found out he has the same lunch as me, and he invited me to sit with his friends. At least it would save me the awkwardness at Avery’s table again.
