I watch Avery as she speeds away from me. I wish she knew that she can't run away from her problems. She can only face them.
Sitting at home is literally killing me. I don't want to be here. This is one of those moments when I need my dad's advice. I need his soothing voice talking me through what to do, but I only have my mom here. Oh well, she's all I got.
“Hey mom,” I say as I walk into her office.
“Hi sweetie. How are you?” she asks.
“I'm... alright. I guess,” I subtly confess.
“You guess? What's up? Talk to me,” she says and she closes her laptop with concern over her face.
“Well... um. Did you dad ever fight and one of you stopped talking to the other?”
“Oh sweetie. You have no idea. A year or so after we started dating, we fought every week. Your father... he- He pushed me to new limits. He challenged me to go out of my shell. It just took time getting used to. Believe it or not, I ran away. I didn't want to crawl out of my skin. I was comfortable there. Then I realized, I needed him just as bad as he needed me. I came back, and we got married six months later.”
I sat back and let it all absorb. Avery's comfortable in her own skin. I can't push her out of that.
“You actually remind me a lot of your father. You go out there and make people step out of their shell, your outgoing, and smart, and a lady killer. Just like him,” my mom confesses. I smile back at her.
“Mom. There's this girl. I think I screwed up.”
“Oh, you mean Avery?” I'm taken aback and mom winks at me.
“How did you know about Avery?” I question.
“Please honey, Lily couldn't stop talking about her. I know a lot more than you think I do.” She smiles at me, and winks. I chuckle at her sudden knowledge.
“Well... I kissed her, but Avery has a boyfriend. I'm so confused. She kissed me back, then she ran. Why did she do that? This girl is so different than all the others mom. She challenges me too. However, she doesn't dump her boyfriend or anything. You can tell she enjoys being with me, when she's with him, you can see the unhappiness in her eyes. Why does she stay with him when she knows she likes me too?”
“Maybe she's comfortable where she is. Maybe she's afraid to take a risk, because she feels safe where she is. The only thing you can really do, is wait for her to come to you. She might confess what was going through her head. Then you'll find out what the outcome really is.”
“Thanks mom,” I say as I hug her, she just proved that I can actually talk to her about stuff. We continue talking for another two hours, then I head to bed.
