Saturday couldn't come slow enough. I wanted to ask Avery so many things. I wanted to ask her why that conversation came up, why she asked me to go to the beach today, and why she wanted my little sister to come. She was a story that needed to be read. I needed to figure her out.
I woke up in the morning with a smile on my face. I realized why I was smiling, my reason, was Avery. She was on my mind all week. I quickly wiped it off my face. I walked out of my room and noticed mom wasn't around. Lily was just sitting on the couch, watching TV. I huffed and grabbed her cereal and a bowl out of the cupboard.
“Hey Lil? Did mom say where she was going?”
“A meeting.” she replied, with eyes glued to the TV.
“Did she already give you breakfast?” I questioned.
“No.” she replied. Of course not. I huffed again and gave her cereal, poured her milk, and grabbed a spoon. She ran over and started to eat, as if she was famished for three days. My poor little sister. I grabbed a bowl for myself and sat down.
After breakfast I got Lily ready for the beach, and got all our stuff together. Then Avery called.
“Hello?” I said.
“Hey Logan! I'm almost at your house, be there in a sec!”
“Alright, see you soon.” I replied. A couple minutes later, Avery was at the door with a smile on her face. I smiled back, but quickly removed it. Hoping she didn't notice. “Hey”
“Hey! So, where's Lily?!” she asked.
“I'M RIGHT HERE!” Lily squealed with delight.
“Are you ready for the beach?” Avery quizzed.
“Yeah! Let's go!” Lily shrieked with delight. Avery looked at me, and smiled. I admired how she immediately took the reigns on handling an eight year old. I could tell right away that she was great with kids.
I grabbed the keys and locked up the house. Avery already had Lily in her seat, and buckled up. How she did it that fast, I have no idea. This girl continued to astonish me. I got into the passenger seat and buckled up, then looked back at Lily.
“You ready Lil?” I wanted to double check she had all her stuff.
“Yes! Can we go now?!” she exclaimed.
“I don't see why not...” Avery said, and she started the car. The 20 minute drive over to Wrightsville Beach was quite interesting. Avery was asking Lily how she likes her school, if she made any friends, and while Avery was quizzing my sister, I had millions of questions in my head. Did she ever ask her boyfriend if he wanted to come? Was he coming at all? Was skinny girl too? Who would all be there? I couldn't take the insanity of the questions running through my head.
“So who's all gonna be there today?” I asked.
“My family. That's it.” she replied while taking a right turn.
“Oh. I thought there would be a lot more people.” I said.
“Well, Zoey was going to come, but she was called into work today. I thought about inviting Owen, but uh, just didn't think it was his scene. I like small groups though.” she said with a smile. I smiled back, then turned my head towards the window.
Once we got to the beach, I got out our stuff from her trunk, and Lily started squealing with joy. Avery calmed her down in an instant, and made sure that Lily held her hand while they crossed the parking lot. I stayed behind, watching Avery and my little sister. The chemistry between those two... I couldn't explain it. They got along instantly, and Lily was being obedient and completely under control. She wasn't like other girls I knew. God, she was a mystery.
