Travis and I walk out of the Hermes cabin, hand in hand. We were hanging out with Miranda and Connor but they wanted to start working on prank plans and so we left them to it. Now we're walking to the training room. Not to train, but to just hang out.
It has been a week since we've talked in the kitchen of the dining hall that day. A month since we got back together, for real this time. Although the rivalry between the Hermes cabin and the Demeter cabin continues, especially during prank wars, Travis and I have never been happier. It keeps me hoping that, depsited being a new couple, the worst is over. Maybe it's all over.
"Hey guys!" Railynn says as we walk in.
"Hey, Rai," I say as I look around and see some campers that are training. My eyes wander over a large crowd at a table in the corner of the room. "What's going on over there?" I ask, pointing.
"Oh, Chiron decided that a couple of kids from each cabin should go take some time helping out at New Rome." She replies. "We'll be able to visit California, see what it's like across the country, and make new friends, all while helping our fellow demigods."
"How many is a few?" Travis asks.
"I don't know, two or three?" She answers. "I'm not sure if I want to do it though...Its the the end of summer. I gotta check up on my dad and go to school...you know?"
"Well it sounds fun I think I might sign up." I say.
"Me too." Travis adds, "New prank victims."
I ignore Travis' smirk and wiggling eyebrows.
"Rai, maybe you can spend a little time with us there before you have to go?" I suggest.
Railynn makes a face.
"Think about it at least?"
"Oh, alright. Maybe." She answers.
"Hey, Rai!" Someone shouts. We turn and see Jake waving her over.
Railynn waves back and says to us, "I gotta go guys see you later."
We say our goodbyes and she jogs over to her boyfriend. I smile at the sight of them when they hug. I watch as Jake gives a kiss on top of Railynn's head as they walk out of the room. I'm so glad they are together. They're adorable.
Travis and I walk over to the table and squeeze our way through the crowd and see Annabeth running the sign ups.
"Hey, Annabeth."
"Hey guys. You wanna sign up? Only a certain amount of campers and come so I'd sign up while there's still space." She says.
"Yes, please."
"Great, Percy and I are going too! Sign here, please."
We sign in and say our goodbyes to her also and walk out of the training room, to the pier. "You excited, Gardner?" Travis asks me
"A little bit, how bout you, Stoll?"
"I'm definitely exited."
"Then I'm more excited."
"No, I'm more excited."
"No. I'm more excited."
"Nuh-uh." what is he? Two years old?
"Uh-huh."
"Nuh-uh!"
"Uh-huh!"
"First one to the pier is more excited!" And with that we take off running.
I laugh and take the lead in front of him, looking back to stick my tongue out at him. He sticks his tongue out back at me and then gives me a mischievous smile. A smile I am oh, too familiar with.
I try to go and gain more speed as I get closer to the pier and honestly, I would have won and I would have been known as more excited. But somebody had to pick my up right as I reached the pier. And somebody had to throw me into the water.
