#5 "A Promise"

Nick froze as he heard a young girl's voice from behind. No..It can't be. He must have imagined it. 

"Santa? Is that you?"

Shit. He was screwed. What should he do? Maybe he should just run? He felt like he would throw up. Damn it. It was the middle of the night for god's sake! Who would have thought someone would be awake at this hour?!

While Nick was hyperventilating, The little girl walked up in front of him and touched his shoulder. "Who are you?" the girl asked.

Frankly, Nick was kinda relieved and frustrated at the fact that the girl didn't scream. Relieved since he didn't want to make a scene and have the cops catch him thus making it inevitable for him to use magic on them, and Frustrated at the thought that what if he was a bad person? If it wasn't him and it was none other than a burglar or a rapist, the girl would have...

"Can't you talk?" the little girl asked again, furrowing her eyebrows.

"Hi, sweetie. My name is Nick. I was dropping of these presents for you." Nick whispered as he squeezed the little girl's hand which was still on his shoulder. The little girl perked up as she heard that.

"So you are Santa!" The little girl squealed as she jumped around hugging him. Nick hugged her back kind of shyly.

"Yes sweetie, I am. What's your name?" Nick asked.

"My name is Sarah! I was waiting for you to come! Selena said that you would only come if I slept but I just had to see you!!" Sarah squealed once again. Nick felt an ache at the name. Selena. 

Shaking his head as if that will numb the pain he felt, Nick asked: "Why did you have to see me, sweetheart?" 

"Because!! I wrote a letter to you explaining what I wanted this Christmas, but I wasn't able to send it to you. So I was waiting to give it to you in person!" Sarah said as she held out an envelope. Nick opened the envelope curiously. When he opened the letter, he let out a sad smile. Sarah had drawn herself and what looked like her sister, with the words "Please give us someone to look after us." 

Sarah staring down at her feet mumbled, "I don't want to be a burden to Selena."

Nick frowned, making wrinkles on his forehead. "What do you mean Sarah? I'm sure Selena doesn't think of you as a burden."

"But she's always working because of me. It's all my fault. I want someone to look after us just like Peter or Lily's parents look after them. That way Selena would be less tired." Sarah said as huge drops fell from her eyes.

"It's not your fault honey. Don't you ever say that." Nick cooed as he embraced the little girl.

"Please. Please make my wish come true. I'll give my present back if it means that my wish will come true." Sarah ran to the tree and picked her present up, and almost thrust the present back to Nick.

"You can keep the present honey. It's a gift after all. I'll keep your wish in mind." Nick said as he tucked the letter in his pocket.

"Promise?" Sarah said with her big eyes. 

"Promise. Now go back to bed, honey. And...Would you keep it a secret that you saw me?" Nick said in a hushed voice.

"Can't I tell Selena?" Sarah asked confused.

"No, honey you can't. It's best if you don't tell her. Or anyone else. It would be our little secret" Nick said, slightly cringing. That sounded so weird. 

"Okay. I promise not to tell." Sarah said.

"Bye honey. I have to go now. I'll try my best to make your wish come true." Nick smiled.

"Bye Santa." Sarah shyly waved.

Nick silently walked to the door. He will make sure not to get caught at the next house. Thank the gods that he was finished with this first delivery. That was what he thought until he heard a 'clang!' with the pain bursting at the back of his head.

Oh, Nick...I'm starting to feel sorry for you.
