We Come With You!

Back at the main square where the cars were, we met the rest of the group. They’d decided to drive back at night itself, because road trips at night were the best, they said. You got the cool wind in your face, and less noise, and faster driving. And the fact that Crista had an old convertible made it more worth the while. Fran urged me to go back in Crista’s car, while she herself stayed back in Hermes’ car. Kon was coming in the convertible.

On the journey back, Hermes and Hector’s cars were driving alongside us. Kon and Crista took turns driving the night, while I curled up in the backseat and just enjoyed the cool wind on my face, the less noise, and the fast car, just like the Greeks had described.

“Lee? Wake up! Home!”, I felt Crista softly shaking me. Waking up, I realized we’d arrived back in Athens. The sky was just starting to lighten into dark blue from black, and the sun hadn’t risen yet. The others were around the car, most looking at me. Feeling self-conscious, I quickly jumped out of the car.
“You sleep well while we do the work driving you?” Kon smiled, hiding the sarcasm well. I rolled my eyes and stretched. The others started walking towards Jupiter.

“What are you going to do today?” Kon asked me as we all huddled in a booth in Jupiter eating breakfast.
Fran was looking out on the street, pretending to watch the people walking up and down. I thought about the answer- What were we going to do now? We didn’t really have a plan.

And then it hit me. Fran was so silent because she didn’t want to state the obvious.
We were done with Greece. We were going to have to move on.

Suddenly, I felt lonely, even though I was at a table full of people.

“You’re leaving, aren’t you?” Hector quietly asked after some time of me avoiding the topic.
“We have to.”
“It’s too soon! Stay at least a week!” Crista frowned.
“You can stay at my place! My mother loves girls!” Kon said hopefully.

Fran frowned at that, and I remembered a certain event when Hermes and Kon had thought we were lesbian.

“Not that way.” He immediately noticed her grimace. “I mean, like daughters.”
“Oh.” Fran nodded, uncharacteristically quiet.
“You still need to see Crete and Rhodes and Meteora and-“
“I have an idea.” Hermes paused from his extremely precious, extremely humongous breakfast, to voice this thought. Everyone looked at him expectantly, the noise died down.
“We come with you.”
I looked at Fran and we burst out laughing.
“No no no, koritsi. Anything is possible.” Hermes smiled secretively.
“But it was awesome knowing you, but listen to me, y’all. This isn’t just a trip we planned on. This is something else, it’s a journey, and we’ve got to go on it on our own.” She smiled at them all, her eyes lingering on Hermes for longer than necessary. He looked away, and she sighed, knowing there would never be a future. Only ‘what if’s, and those weren’t Fran’s cup of tea.
“We keep in touch, okay?” He asked us. We nodded.

The rest of the breakfast was the quietest I’d ever feel in Greece, or among Greeks.

I know, sob, sob, sob. But I'm trying to make this as less staged and obvious and cliche as possible (Yeah I know the basic idea is a little cliche, but I'm trying!). And the group traipsing along with them for the rest of the trip would've been very very, VERY staged. So this had to happen :/
Oh, and say hello to Konstantinos (ahem ahem KONSTANTINOS) Laios right there ----->
He's Greek. Need I say more? ;)
