Goes out to Akshaya for the advice on uploading, and for being an awesome person overall ;)
Thank you! Finally at around dawn, sleep came to me, but it didn’t last very long. I was shaken awake by Kon (ahem, my new boyfriend) who told me we needed to leave the room, because it was nearing check out time. So packing up, I dragged my backpack out with the rest of them. As Crista settled the bill, we got together a game plan for today.
When Crista rejoined us, we decided to split up and go to the banks where we had an account and solve our money issue. Googling the banks name, I set off with Fran. After explaining our problem to the manager there, I managed to get hold of a renewed credit card, and Fran managed to get an ATM card that was valid worldwide. We checked our balance, and it was dangerously low, so we made a conscious decision to watch our expenses from now on, and not behave like the kids who spent all their Christmas money on candy.
We met up with the rest of them at the marketplace where we’d set up our Kissing Stall yesterday, and all of us had managed to get hold of some money. That day, we decided that from now on, we’d try to dip into our savings as little as possible. Instead, we’d earn our way through this trip, like we had yesterday.
Fran was getting hooked onto YouTube, what with all our recent fame; she’d opened the app the minute we’d settled down.
“You guys, we’ve got like, a thousand fans already! And it’s been just a day!” She excitedly viewed our profile, replying to some messages from fans.
She chanced upon a video that someone had taken of us yesterday at the Kissing Stall, and then reported that person for breach of privacy, saying “No account apart from ours dare post a video of us without our permission.”
As Fran browsed through our videos, reporting people left, right and center, she happened to land on the one we’d taken at the hostel, where we’d asked the fans to drop us some suggestions about how we could solve our money problem. The response had been surprisingly overwhelming; practically everyone had suggested something.
Dance on the streets!
Withdraw from a bank?
Set up the kissing stall and I’ll make sure to visit!
Sing!
Street band is a good way to attract a crowd and get some money.
Pay people to take their photographs.
Take up a part time job for a little while
Go to a homeless shelterFew others were ridiculous, like someone suggested we become pickpockets. Few were outrageous to say the least, like the one that suggested we join a strip club since we were in Amsterdam. Most were impractical, but some were really novel ideas. My ears perked up when Fran read out the photography suggestion. I’d already been told I was good at it; I could give it a shot.
At the end of it all, we decided that splitting up again was the only option if we wanted to make enough money to last us all. I decided I was going to make good on the photographing suggestion, and the boys said they’d continue with the kissing stall, seeing as how it was quite a hit yesterday. Although deep down, I wasn’t happy to see any of them, especially Kon, kiss a girl for money, they seemed to be fine with it and we were in a tight fix, so we let them do their thing. Marie said she had some unfinished art and craft work which she could finish and put up for sale, while Crista and Fran decided to download karaoke tracks and sing on the streets.
We shot a quick video, telling the fans what we planned to do, and to support us as they best could, and signed out of YouTube after replying to some of the good comments and suggestions, thanking the people who’d posted them.
After we’d set up the stall for the boys, Fran had downloaded all the karaoke tracks that she and Crista knew the words to, and Marie had finished off her work displayed it, we split. Fran and Crista went to the other side of the market place, while Marie stayed with her stall set up right next to the boys’ kissing stall.
