In the distance, I heard loud music and laughter. Then I looked down at myself. I wasn’t in the school uniform; I was in a peach dress with matching heels. With a start, I realized it was Prom Night. I walked through the corridors in the gym. Unconsciously, my eyes searched for someone.Josh.
They were searching for Josh, my date to Prom, my boyfriend. They were searching, and searching, but in vain.
Josh was nowhere to be seen.
Fran came running up to me, a huge smile plastered on her face.
“Where were you! Come on, didn’t you want to videotape something?”
I had. In my last weeks of high school, I’d suddenly woken up to the realization that these days would never return, that I should preserve some memories. That was when I’d taken to videography, taping everyone and everything that was dear to me, that I wouldn’t want to forget.
“Yeah.” I forced a smile.I took the camera from her and started looking through the lens at people dancing, talking, laughing, cheering, and enjoying Prom. Some couples were new; you could tell by the way they were still a little awkward around each other. Some wouldn’t last; they looked at every hot person except their partners. Some were seasoned couples that everyone knew about, like Joshua and I. Some were stag, hitting on other stags. There was a group of friends, dancing wildly in a circle. I videotaped the group for a while, smiling to myself, thinking how lovely it was to have friends. Suddenly, my own friend interrupted.
“I think I need to go to my car. I’ve forgotten my purse inside.” Fran said.
“I’ll come with you.” Maybe I’d find Josh on the way.As we neared the parking lot, Fran put on the video camera again, videotaping me as we walked.
“I’m getting a neat view of your ass from behind. This dress was just made for you.” Fran giggled.
I turned behind in embarrassment as I saw that she was, indeed, videotaping my butt.
“You’re the most embarrassing friend in history.”
“Guilty. You’re irresistible!” She laughed as I walked on backward. She got the camera off me and swung it around the parking lot to spot her vehicle.
“Aha! Ladies and gentlemen, there you see my lovely car and-“ She stopped talking, and took the camera lens off her eyes to squint at her car.
“What happened?” I turned to look at what she was looking.
“I wouldn’t really go there.” She said, looking unsure.
I laughed, turning to look. And then I saw him, Josh.
My brain registered the girl he had pressed up against his car, his tongue in her mouth, his hands lost in the folds of her gown, her underwear discarded on the bonnet.
That girl wasn’t me. It was Kelly.Hearing my gasp, Josh broke away from her and looked up. And then, his eyes went wide.
“Oh my god.” Fran whispered from behind me.“Lee? Lee!” I felt someone shake me. I woke up, and my eyes adjusted to the dim light.
A dream. That’s all it was, Lee. Just a bad dream.
“Are you okay?” Kon whispered from where he was sitting next to me.
“What happened?”
“You’ve been talking, a lot.” I heard a voice I recognized. Hermes.Lifting my head a little, I saw that our whole group was awake, and was standing around my bunk, giving me a little breathing space. On my other side sat Fran, worry lines lining her forehead.
“I was talking about Prom Night?” I asked, scared of the answer.
She nodded.
