In the distance, I heard loud music and laughter. Then I looked down at myself. I wasn’t in the school uniform; I was in a peach dress with matching heels. With a start, I realized it was Prom Night. I walked through the corridors in the gym. Unconsciously, my eyes searched for someone.
Josh.
They were searching for Josh, my date to Prom, my boyfriend. They were searching, and searching, but in vain.
Josh was nowhere to be seen.
Fran came running up to me, a huge smile plastered on her face.
“Where were you! Come on, didn’t you want to videotape something?”
I had. In my last weeks of high school, I’d suddenly woken up to the realization that these days would never return, that I should preserve some memories. That was when I’d taken to videography, taping everyone and everything that was dear to me, that I wouldn’t want to forget.
“Yeah.” I forced a smile.
I took the camera from her and started looking through the lens at people dancing, talking, laughing, cheering, and enjoying Prom. Some couples were new; you could tell by the way they were still a little awkward around each other. Some wouldn’t last; they looked at every hot person except their partners. Some were seasoned couples that everyone knew about, like Joshua and I. Some were stag, hitting on other stags. There was a group of friends, dancing wildly in a circle. I videotaped the group for a while, smiling to myself, thinking how lovely it was to have friends. Suddenly, my own friend interrupted.
“I think I need to go to my car. I’ve forgotten my purse inside.” Fran said.
“I’ll come with you.” Maybe I’d find Josh on the way.
As we neared the parking lot, Fran put on the video camera again, videotaping me as we walked.
“I’m getting a neat view of your ass from behind. This dress was just made for you.” Fran giggled.
I turned behind in embarrassment as I saw that she was, indeed, videotaping my butt.
“You’re the most embarrassing friend in history.”
“Guilty. You’re irresistible!” She laughed as I walked on backward. She got the camera off me and swung it around the parking lot to spot her vehicle.
“Aha! Ladies and gentlemen, there you see my lovely car and-“ She stopped talking, and took the camera lens off her eyes to squint at her car.
“What happened?” I turned to look at what she was looking.
“I wouldn’t really go there.” She said, looking unsure.
I laughed, turning to look.
And then I saw him, Josh.
My brain registered the girl he had pressed up against his car, his tongue in her mouth, his hands lost in the folds of her gown, her underwear discarded on the bonnet.
That girl wasn’t me. It was Kelly.
Hearing my gasp, Josh broke away from her and looked up. And then, his eyes went wide.
“Oh my god.” Fran whispered from behind me.
“Lee? Lee!” I felt someone shake me. I woke up, and my eyes adjusted to the dim light.
A dream. That’s all it was, Lee. Just a bad dream.
“Are you okay?” Kon whispered from where he was sitting next to me.
“What happened?”
“You’ve been talking, a lot.” I heard a voice I recognized. Hermes.
Lifting my head a little, I saw that our whole group was awake, and was standing around my bunk, giving me a little breathing space. On my other side sat Fran, worry lines lining her forehead.
“I was talking about Prom Night?” I asked, scared of the answer.
She nodded.
All of them looked between us, expectant.
“Let’s go for a walk?” I suggested. “I need some fresh air. I’m going to puke.”
We landed up in a deserted public garden. All around us, London was sleeping peacefully, a stark contrast to my insides, which were still squirming under the gazes of my friends.
“He thought I was too boring, never willing to experiment with new things, reserved, shy.” I mumbled, starting to explain. “He thought that I was being stuck up. Kelly was like a breath of fresh air after dating me for so long.”
I still remembered every word he said that night, when he explained why we couldn’t work out anymore, but I didn’t want to lay it all out for them. That was too painful; it was in the part of my heart that I wouldn’t be laying open for a very long time.
I released the breath of air I had been holding in, and looked around at our little group. They all looked back at me, attentively listening as Fran and I continued about how I bombed my Senior finals because of my depression following the break up, how I ended up coming second after years of coming first, and how I ran away from Graduation without planning anything.
“You refused to have sex with him, didn’t you?” Hermes said after a short pause.
How on Earth did he-
He started laughing “‘Experimenting’ is code for try having sex with me!”
I just hung my head, tired with emotional overload.
Crista leaned across and put his hand on my shoulder. “If you refuse to do something against your principles, you’re strong, not stuck up.”
“And what’s this merda about you being boring? Which boring person invents words like Tritanic and runs away from Graduation when they’re second in class?” Kon reasoned.
“You remember when we stood second in class?” Hermes snickered.
“You stood second from behind.” Crista rolled her eyes.
“You were first from behind!” Kon snickered and then, exchanging mild insults, they high fived each other.
And just like that, everything went back to normal. We got up and trudged back to the youth hostel, Crista complaining loudly about how she hadn’t had a wink of sleep. We were knackered by the time we got back, and even though the sky was just beginning to lighten, we crept into our bunks and dozed off
