"Kano, you go in an get some food, I'll fill up on gas again. Ry, you stay here, okay?" Rosaline says.
We both nod, before those two exit the car. It's been a week since we started living in Rosaline's car. I don't know how, but we've managed to live fairly well. Rosaline had a stash of about a thousand dollars in her house. Why? She said that she knew she would need to leave soon, and she wanted to be prepared for the worst. I still can't believe she had one thousand dollars just laying around in her house, but, it's certainly beneficial.
We sleep in the car, because we're worried we'll be caught or traced if we check into motels and inns. It's a little cramped, but since Kano and Rosaline like to sleep in the front with their seats extended back, I get the whole back row to stretch out on. We're living on the run, and we're trying to make good use of it.
I look out the window to see Kano entering the small convenience store with a small wad of cash, then Rosaline piping in gas into the car.
I sigh, leaning back. I have yet to prove to them that I'm useful, so instead they treat me like a child, which is honestly justified. I am a child. Whenever we have a small stop like this one, they make me sit here quietly, staying out of sight from anyone. They claim it's 'because I'm so valuable to the government, I can't be seen by anyone', but I think it's because they think I'm too weak to handle stuff.
I'm stronger now! At least... I think I am.
A few minutes later, Kano enters the car, carrying two plastic bags full of food. He turns around to face me with a smile, handing me a bag of chips, and a water bottle.
"What are you going to heat up now?" I ask him.
He shows me the microwavable stir fry container, and I grin, nodding. Kano places it in his hand, before using his ability to heat it up. It's quite funny, really; Kano's now a human microwave. Rosaline teases him about it all the time, and I just sit in the back and giggle.
A minute later, he hands it to me, but not before saying, "It's hot, so be careful."
I roll my eyes, grabbing it from him. Like I thought before, they treat me like a child.
He hands me a plastic fork as well, and I dig in, ignoring the slight sting of the hot food on my tongue. After eating a third of it, I hand it to him. We all decided a while ago, that to save money, we would share meals between us all, no matter how small or how big, but Kano still buys us snacks sometimes.
He eats his portion, before Rosaline enters as well, eating her portion quickly. We're all silent, exhausted from today's driving. We'll be stopping somewhere out of sight from others, especially the police, so we can sleep. Rosaline already found a place.
The soft patter of rain as we begin to drive starts to make me drowsy. It's so calming. My eyes start to close, before the rain begins to pick up. I fall asleep to the constant beat of the rain against my window.
.
.
.
"SHIT!" Someone suddenly screams, jolting me awake.
Then, I feel the car being harshly thrown around, resulting in me hitting my head against the window. The sound of glass shattering all around me sends my head into a spiral of terror and confusion.
The car stops moving, and pain explodes behind my head and where I had already aggravated my injuries. What just happened?
My eyelids start to shut again, feeling something warm ooze out of the back of my head, the sensation odd. Darkness seems to be eating me alive, almost as if I'm a victim of my own abilities. An odd weight or pressure of some sort is on my injured leg, making it feel weird and numb almost. Why can't I feel anything? What's going on? Maybe I'm dreaming... is this a dream? Then, I should just go back into sleep...
"Kid!"
"Kid!"
"Kid!" I finally register that someone is calling me, though I don't know why I'm being referred to as 'kid'. I feel the weight come off my injured leg, and that's when the pain comes. I cry out, feeling it shoot up my leg, and to my side.
The pain behind my head is apparent as well, and it almost makes me black out again.
"Come on, we have to get him out!" Someone exclaims.
I feel them drag me out, before the movement suddenly stops. A soft thump by me makes me look to where it sounded from. Kano's limp and bloody body sends me into a panic, until I see the shallow breaths he's still taking.
"Kano," I whisper, feeling my brain starting to shut down again. "Rosaline?"
The thought of where Rosaline is keeps me from blacking out for a little. I hear Kano's labored breathing, and I know he's in a lot more pain than me.
Then, I hear the crunch of glass under someone's foot. I try to look over to where it was, but the pain in my side and leg keep me from turning around fully. "Rosaline?" I ask weakly.
"Afraid not," another person says, walking over to where Kano and I are.
"What should we do with them? Jade went too hard on them," another voice murmurs.
"Bring them to camp, of course," the first voice says.
"Who... are you people?" I ask weakly, my voice barely above a whisper.
They go silent, before someone's bright silver eyes come into my view. "Don't worry, Kid, we've got you. Just relax, and go back to sleep."
I realized I updated yesterday, too, but I guess it makes up for the few I've missed. Sorry, again! But hey, I finally found a way to connect plot points, and I'm actually very happy with the way this is turning out!
I'm going to TRY my best to update back on schedule again, too.
