Song is Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez.
"Smiths?" The nurse calls into the waiting room.
"That would be us! Come on, children," my mother calls to my siblings and I.
Today, my twin, Mason, and I turned five, which is said to be the best time for kids to get tested. We're getting tested for insanity. Ever since insanity has become a disease, the whole world's been doing these tests to catch the disease before it becomes too late. Our older sister, Emma, came with us to the Testing Institution. This is where all the testing for every illness or disorder happens.
Mason grabs onto my hand, squeezing it lightly.
"You okay?" He asks me, his lisp getting in the way a little.
"Mhm. I'm just scared."
He hugs me quickly, before we continue walking down the corridor. The lights above us seem to flicker a bit when I pass under them. Odd.
The nurse leads us to a door, the handle just out of reach for my short figure. The nurse opens the door for us, only letting Mason and I in.
"Ma'am, we'll need you and your daughter to remain outside."
"Okay," my mother complies, stepping back a bit.
"Good luck, my Angels!" My mother cries to us, before the door shuts.
"Okay, boys! Would you please sit down in each chair?" The nurse asks us.
Mason nods eagerly, running over to a chair, letting go of my hand in the process. I follow hesitantly, sitting down in a chair next to his.
"Okay, boys, we're going to put you to sleep. Then, we'll give your little minds a few scenarios through a program we'll hook you up to. It's not going to hurt one bit, alright?"
"Okay, Miss!" Mason chirps.
I just nod my head. The nurse grins, before coming over with wires with head attachments on the tips. She sticks a few to our heads, before leaving the room.
A few minutes later, a man with gray in his hair, and a crisp and clean white lab coat enters. The nurse appears on his heals, rolling in a large device with a monitor on it.
"Alright, boys! Let's get to it! Nurse Jane? Please hand them the anesthesia pills," the man says.
Nurse Jane nods, handing Mason and I a colorful pill.
"It's chew-able, and tastes like candy! So, eat up!" Nurse Jane chirps.
Mason pops it in his mouth, chewing happily. I follow suit, feeling the stuff dissolve and go down my throat.
A minute later, my eyes start to feel heavy, and my thoughts become sluggish. I don't remember ever falling asleep, but the next moment, I'm alone and in the dark.
"Hello?" I ask the darkness.
I walk through the darkness, stumbling upon a small flower.
"Pretty!"
I kneel down to touch it, but it shrivels up, turning brown, before crumbling to dust.
Tears start to prick my eyes, feeling sad that the pretty flower disappeared.
I continue walking, until I come across a little pond.
"Water!" I chirp, running over to the water.
It looks so inviting! I put my hand in it, but it start to bubble up. The water starts to turn black, then small bones start to float up, before they turn to ashes.
I cry out, retracting my hand. Tears now flow down my face. As soon as I retract my hand, the pond disappears.
Next, a small puppy comes running towards me.
"Puppy!" I squeal, running to the little creature.
I hug the puppy tightly, but then it lets out an agonized whimper, before it seems to shrivel up like the flower, turning to ashes.
"Puppy?" I whimper, looking around for the puppy.
"Puppy!"
I get up, sniffling, before I continue to walk. Then I see my family.
"Ryan!" Mason screams, running towards me.
"Mason!"
I run to him too, hugging him tightly. Then his scream breaks the darkness, as he crumples to the ground, turning to ashes as well.
I scream too, before the darkness shatters to pieces.
"No!" I scream out, jolting awake.
Tears flow down my cheeks, and when I turn to Mason, I find that he's not there anymore.
"Mason?!" I scream, struggling with something wrapped around my chest and legs and arms.
"Hold him down, Nurse Jane!" The man from before shouts to the nurse, who hold my down as I struggle harder.
"Mason!" I scream again, my throat beginning to feel raw from my pure screams.
The man frowns at me, before opening the door to the room. The nurse pulls me up, placing me on a strapped bed. She puts the straps from the bed over-top my previous restraints.
"What's going on?!" I scream, sobs mixing in with my heavy panic.
"Ryan!" Mason screams.
I turn my head as much as I can, to see a crying Mason in a sobbing Emma's arms. My mother suddenly falls to the ground, her head in her hands as she sobs.
"I'm sorry," the man tells her.
"What's happening?" I whimper out.
"Shh, shh," the nurse coos.
"Let me go back to my family!"
"I'm sorry, but you can't," the man suddenly says, now right next to me.
"W-why?" I whimper.
"You're insane."
Here's the update schedule: SUNDAYS AND THURSDAYS.
And I'll also be doing the question thing I did with my other book!
QUESTION TIME: What do you prefer out of these three flavor "styles": Salty, sweet, or spicy?
My Answer: Well, I love salty foods, but I also like the occasional sweet thing. Spicy foods are not my favorite at all. I can eat some spicy things, but I prefer other flavors.
