Maddeline and Joel were dancing, her head resting on his shoulder and his hands on her hips while they swayed together until clearing of a throat made Maddeline lift her head from its resting position.
"Sorry to interrupt, Zach said "but could I talk with you for a minute?" he asked, completely ignoring Joel, that was still holding Maddeline close.
Joel looked down at Maddeline, who stood glued to the floor in shock, with parted lips and wide eyes.
"Maybe another time," Joel answered, looking at Zach with a frown, even though he was still fixated on Maddeline.
"I wasn't talking to you," Zach shrugged and tried again. "Maddeline, can I please talk to you?"
Finally getting off her semi-shocked state, Maddeline nodded before looking at Joel and smiling softly.
"Don't worry, it'll only be a couple minutes at most, and when I'm done we'll get to go home. Go say goodbye to your father." She winked, kissed his cheek and walked away with Zach in direction of the balcony.
Once the two of them were alone and away from the noise of the chattering. Zach turned in Maddeline's direction and all the feelings came flooding into him. Taking a deep breath, he took one of her hands in his and looked her in the eye.
"I want you back." Zach said.
"Way to break the ice..." Maddeline ran her free hand through her hair and look everywhere but at Zach, that couldn't keep his eyes off her.
"Maddeline, please, listen to me, listen to what I have to say. Please, I want to make everything right again."
"You want to make everything right? Do you even understand what you are asking for?" Maddeline said, pulling her hand from his hold. "You have no right whatsoever to come into my life after almost three years. You left me alone, while I was pregnant and didn't even give a fuck when I had the miscarriage! Did you really think I would be open to being in a relationship with you after that? Did you really think I would bend to you will when you didn't even bother to be there for me when I needed you?!"
"You can go fuck yourself, Zach. I'm not the same scared little girl you left, and I'm never going back to that. Not even mentioning the fact that I am with Joel now, and in all honesty, I couldn't be happier."
With that, Maddeline turned and walked away, hand holding her dress skirt up to allow her to walk faster.
As soon as she reached Joel, she took his hand and rested her head on his chest, taking deep breaths for a moment before looking at him.
"Is everything alright?" He asked as he let one hand rest on the back of her neck.
"Everything is fine. Can we just go now?"
"Let's get out of here, darling." Joel kissed her lightly on the lips and twined their fingers together before pulling her out of the hotel and into a taxi.
"What about your car?" Maddeline laughed as they drove off.
"I'll pick it up sometime during the week, don't worry about that." Joel shrugged. "What about some real food before we go home?" He wiggled his eyebrows, making her laugh.
"I could really go for some really greasy, tasty food right now." Maddeline said, smiling brightly.
*
"God, I love this." Maddeline moaned.
"I know. D'you want more?" Joel asked.
"God yes!"
Laughing, Joel gave her his fries, seeing how she quickly shoved half of them in her mouth.
"Who knew a girl in a gown and inhaling fried could look so sexy." He said eyeing Maddeline, who promptly flipped him of.
"Leave me and my fries alone." She threatened, eating another bunch.
"Technically, those are my fries." Joel laughed, having a bit of his own burger.
When they were done with their food, they walked back to Maddeline's place, just down the street, hand in hand.
"That sure was an eventful night..." Joel said as when they were finally home.
"Well, I'm just glad your father didn't take a guillotine to use on me."
"My Lord, Maddeline, do you have to be so morbid?" Joel looked at her with his face scrounged up in horror.
"Always!" She smiled at him. "Now help me get out of this dress."
