An elderly man sat painfully on the couch, massaging his back against the arm of his chair as he wiped the sweat off of his brow. He was still taking shifts at the old high school, regretting the effort and pain of the day job. The children treated him with no respect and the pay had never been worth it.
By night, he was the body cleaner for the Mafia, receiving the pay and respect from his peers. He worked to wipe the will and role from his targets, adding further complication to the town as they attempted to discover his fellow members. His job was extremely important to the Godfather, keeping him in good-standing with the man.
The fan was gently humming throughout the room, allowing him to ease his fried nerves as the clock chimed. It was midnight, and he wasn't paid enough for working overtime. He knew he needed to quit before he was discovered, but he was hungry for food scraps and cold, hard cash.
The man had cracked the windows in the living room, the cool breeze slapping him in the face as he worked to cool himself off before rushing to bed and repeating his tasks again in the morning. That night had been quiet throughout the Mafia, waiting for the next move to be announced.
He took this moment to reflect, thinking more on his current situation. Those kids were nothing but disrespectful, their voices carrying throughout the cafeteria and causing him to hide within the janitor's closet. He spent most of his time there, reading a book or planning his duties for the night. It wasn't worth keeping the job, but he feared leaving and causing an uproar. What if they did a further investigation of why he was leaving and outed his fellow comrades on accident?
His thoughts were interrupted when the bushes began to rustle, causing the man to jump. He sat there with anticipation, looking towards the wall to watch for a shift in the shadows. He could see the figure of a young woman, bringing his attention back to the window as he watched her shoulders disappear out of sight. He immediately stood, forcing himself to ignore his aching bones as he rushed to get a better view.
She was standing in the town square, observing the first vacant house. He wasn't able to recognize her from the high school, but she seemed young enough to be friends with the students regardless. His jaw was tight with anger, remembering the children who worked to make his life miserable one day at a time. He looked towards the front entrance of his home, finding his cleaning supplies leaning against the doorframe.
Revenge is sweet, but not dirty.
This was the woman who would receive hisrevenge.
