"I can not believe this place still exist," Derek dipped a curly-fry into the whip cream of his vanilla milkshake. He groaned at the taste, savoring the deliciousness, eyes closed.
"I can't believe you still do that," Andy said, jokingly.
The two boys sat at the booth, the one near the window with a view of the street. Andy and Derek got lost in small chit-chat, catching up on the last three years of life, sharing out of one milkshake with two bendy straws point in their direction, and a tray of fresh curly-fries to share.
Andy was in the middle of laughing his guts up, Derek telling him a story. "So Madison's father is furious, and I just had to sit there, covering myself because, well you know."
"What happened next?"
"He drags me by the hair through the entire house, one hand covering my junk and the other trying to pull my hair from his hand. And of course you got Madison screaming, "Daddy, please stop! Don't hurt him!" " Derek mimicked Madison's pitchy voice. "So it's a huge nuisance." Derek kept cracking smiles. "So he throws me outside, butt-naked and freezing-"
"No way!"
"Yes! Now I'm streaking the neighborhood, running back home. I swear, I almost lost a toe that night--and not the one you think I'm talking about," Derek took a sip from the milkshake.
Once the laughter died, so did their happy expressions, left in their own thoughts. It wasn't awkward, it was calming. Then Andy says: "We've missed so much."
Derek nodded, a small smirk that told Andy he understood. Andy didn't understand.
"Why was that?" Andy asked, twirling the straw in the milkshake, now watery and whip cream gone.
"What?"
"Why did we stop being friends?" Andy stopped playing with milkshake, kept his hands still on the table.
"If I'm being honest, Andy, you found someone better. We didn't just stop being friends, but I slowly disappeared; faded into the background as someone else took the spotlight," Derek tried his best to smile, making it seem like it wasn't that big of a deal. But it was for the both of them.
"I'm sorry," Andy said.
"Don't worry about it. I made friends, and I forgot about you as well," Derek replied.
The silence didn't last long. Derek's uncomfortable expression lifted, showing something bright and wild. Curious, Andy asked, "What?"
"I have an idea--but it involves danger and wet clothes!"
"What are you-- Oh no," Andy felt a chill run down his spine.
"Oh yes!"
"I bet we still have time--" Derek checked the time on his phone. Almost an hour till sunset. "We can make still make it!
"Derek, there is no way I'm doing this," Andy argued.
"You're not, we are! Let's go Andy Miller! Derek jumped up, throwing a ten-dollar bill on the table, shooting for the exit.
Andy groaned, getting up from the booth, following Derek out of the diner. As doubtful as he was, Andy was actually kind of excited.
"Who's pedaling?" Andy asked.
"Are you crazy? You know how I like to feel the breeze through my hair," Derek dramatically flipped his light, brown, helmet hair.
Andy rolled his eyes, hopping on his bike. Derek followed, sitting on the bike rack with his legs levitating off the ground. They both felt foolish, but at the same time tomorrow never existed. Andy began to pedal, quickly--They didn't want to miss it.
