There was something extraordinary about your first time doing something; for Andy, it's actually going to a party. A party with Derek, who was going to be at his house any minute to pick him up. Andy took a deep breath, thinking about the rest of his first times-extraordinary. Even the clichés-how nervous you get when you hold someone's hand, your first kiss, making love, falling in love.
But he's only done that with Shawn and that's the first thing that's come to mind; him and Shawn always, together, on the beach holding hands, or in the bedroom, their limbs wrapped around one another, feeling. . . Extraordinary.
Andy felt a stir inside his stomach. Nervous? Why is he nervous? He hasn't been this anxious in a long time, and then the doorbell rings and that's when something kicks him in the gut.
Don't throw up. Don't throw up, Andy.
Andy answered the door, moving his sister Rosemary aside, who just about had her hand on the handle. He saw Derek's face, that innocent smile he gave when he saw Andy. Andy flashed a quick smile back, just to be cute.
"You ready to go?" Derek asked.
"Yeah, I'm ready."
"And where do you think you're going?" Andy's mom appeared, giving both the boys an intimidating glare.
"Mom!" Andy said, sounding annoyed. "We're going on a date, I didn't realize it'll be a problem!' Andy told his mother.
"It's not, but you the rules; always need to know where you're going before you go."
Andy jerked his head back towards Derek, who had no idea what to say. So Andy lied.
"We're going to watch a movie." He took a look back at Derek, who-glad he did-remained calm, looking just as confident when he arrived.
"I'll have him back by the appropriate time, Mrs. Miller," Derek said, flashing a smile.
"You better. Have fun." Andy's mom waved them off, shutting the door behind them.
"You didn't tell her about the party?" Derek asked, loudly whispering.
"Well, obviously!" Andy playfully slapped Derek on the shoulder.
"Andy Miller, what has gotten into you?"
Andy chuckled, following Derek out to the car, getting in the passenger seat, Derek hopping in the drivers'. Derek started the car and pulled out of the driveway, driving to the party.
Marilyn Dobrev had just touched up her glittery-pink lip gloss, running her hands down her black jacket as she posed in the mirror standing in the corner of her bedroom. She hoped Andy was there, she wasn't going to stay home if there was any chance Andy did decide to show up to the party. And besides, Marilyn felt like she needed a drink. . .or two. She worked up a smile, then left her bedroom on her way to the party.
People were everywhere; dancing in the living room, making-out on the stairs, eating in the kitchen, drunk people out in the yard gazing at the sky, some even passed out, and loud music to inspire it all. In ones mind a disaster like this would be beautiful, but to Andy, he saw destruction. Why do people go to parties when there's throw-up at almost every corner and you can't hear what you're saying? He felt misplaced. Probably because Derek had told him to wait here, and this was his first party. He should be home, locked in his room, reading a book.
Derek emerged from the crowd, two cups in his hand, passing one to him. He watched Derek took a drink. He smelled the liquid and cringed, the odor pungent. Andy took a sip making a face. It taste awful, he thought. He took another drink. Derek smiled at him and he smiled back, not knowing how else to reply.
