Tristan POV
I wake up early in the morning careful not to wake Xander. She doesn't have to be at work for another 3 hours. I make breakfast and get ready for work.
Ring Ring!
I check the caller ID and it's Sue. Sue is the in home nurse I hired to take care of my father since I moved out.
Tristan: Hey Sue, what's up?
Sue: Hey Tristan, I was hoping you could stop by this morning if it's not too much trouble?
Tristan: Um, I can try and be there but I have work in an hour. I can't stay long.
Sue: You won't be here long Mr. Kane.
We say our goodbyes and I finish making breakfast for Xander. I leave her a note on the counter, telling her I love her and I hope she has a good day at school.
I drive to my father's house and park on the side of the house. "Sue!" I yell letting myself into the house. She emerges from the back room with an apron and nurse attire on underneath.
"That was fast!" She says wiping her hands on a towel. "I just finished giving your dad a bath, walk with me to the kitchen." I follow close behind her curious as to what she might have to talk to me about.
"So what's going on?" I ask her sitting at the island.
"You know since working here, I've enjoyed getting to know your father and you." She says hanging her head low.
"Yeah, he likes you. That was a surprise for me." I tell her truthfully. My father wasn't fond of new faces, seeing as though he could barely remember his own sons.
"Yeah, but your father's insurance isn't paying for all of the necessities anymore." She tells me this not looking at me. Like she was afraid of my reaction.
"Your saying you quit?" I ask hoping her answer is no. She sighs and rubs her face roughly, "I'm saying, I can't properly take care of your father if he can't afford the things he needs.." I feel my skin starting to crawl with anxiety, I don't know how this could be happening right now.
"I can't take care of him, I don't even live with him anymore to do that. Is there any way you can stay until I figure out something for him?" I plead with her, I had no way of taking care of my father in Xander and I's one bedroom apartment.
"I can for another couple months, since all he has will last that long. But you have to prepare for when I no longer have these supplies." I nod and pull her into a hug.
"Thank you so much Sue! You have no idea how much his means to me." She smiles and hugs me tighter. "Okay, now get to work, I don't need you losing your job." I nod and rush to my car and drive to work.
On the way there I couldn't get my father's current condition off my mind. Maybe work won't be demanding today and I can look up retirement homes I could afford. The more I think about it the more stressed I become. I reach my work site for today and Kev is yelling at Parker about something, something tells me to stay in the car a bit longer. But I ignore that voice and walk up to both of them calmly.
"You don't know how to do anything right! How could you be so stupid as to put the wrong cement down on this pavement! Do you know how much money you just costs me?!" Kev screams in Parker's face.
"Sir, I was told that was the right cement, I didn't there was a specific type we were using for this ground here." Parker says lowly. I stand behind Kev gesturing for Parker to tell me what happened.
"Get out of my face Parker!" Kev storms off and slams the office door.
Parker walks over to me with sorrow in his eyes. "What just happened?" I ask when he gets close enough.
"Remember that cement job we did last month?" I nod.
"Well apparently there was a specific type of cement that was supposed to me laid down and when the owners of the building came by this past week they noticed it wasn't what they paid for." Parker shook his head before continuing. "Kev gets a phone call from the owners and they tell him if he doesn't find out how to fix it they'll make sure he doesn't work construction much longer." Parker looks around the lot sadly.
"Why was he yelling at you though?"
"He needed someone to blame and I was the supervising lead that day."
"That's bull sh*t man!" Parker nods his head and sighs deeply.
"It's okay, I should have double checked the order before laying it down." I felt bad for Parker, he did a good job keeping things organized and together. I hope he doesn't get fired for this.
"Let's get to work, we don't need Kev on our backs anymore than he already is." Parker suggests.
No sooner than 30 min into the day I hear Kev yelling for me to meet him in his office. Damn. I walk to the office and hesitate to knock on the door.
Just get it over with Tristan.
I knock "Come in."
"Hey, Kev what's going on?"
"You were 20 min late today." He says simply.
"Yeah, I was I had to work something out with the nurse for my father." I told him truthfully.
"You have an excuse every time you come here." An excuse?
"It's not an excuse sir, I am the only family he has and-"
"I have told you before, you need to let me know when things like that come up. I am already coming under fire with the mess Parker did. I don't need the big bosses coming down here seeing these punch in's and nothings being done about it." I pray he isn't saying what I think he is.
"I'm sorry Tristan but, I gotta let you go." Yes he is saying what I thought he was. I get up from the chair and walk out without another word.
I get into my car and drive to the house. I sit on the couch watching a blank television screen, I feel something in me break into a million pieces.
