Summary: Jon decides to ask Damian what the meaning of a word is.
It was a calm afternoon. Jon and Damian were currently lying on the grass, admiring the clouds above.
Not a single word had came out of their mouth. Damian could have sworn Jon had fallen asleep; due to the fact that Jon had been surprisingly quiet for more than 5 minutes.
It was the sudden movement of Jon's fingers intertwining with his own that confirmed the boy had been awake.
They continued to stay that way: silent, fingers intertwined, and admiring the sky.
The silence ended as soon as Jonathon began to talk.
"Damian?" The younger boy spoke softly, not wanting to disturb his friend.
"Hmm..." Damian mumbled.
"You're the smartest person I've ever met. Because of this, I do believe you can tell me the meaning of a word I don't understand?" Jon questioned.
"I do believe I might now the meaning. What's the word?" Damian asked.
Jonathon took a deep breath before speaking again.
"Love." He finally answered.
Damian was perplexed: How could a kid like Jon not know what love meant?
"Love is an affectionate feeling." Damian said.
"No no, I know what love means. I just don't understand it. Help me understand?" Jon said.
"I can't. As much as I'd liked to, only you can understand what love is. What I 'love' may be different from what you 'love'. You'll figure out one day." Damian explained.
Jon let out a sigh; even the smartest person he knew couldn't help him understand the meaning of a word.
"Hey, maybe if you list a couple of things that make you feel somewhat affectionate, I can use them to help you understand more about love." Damian offered, not wanting the younger boy to be upset.
"Can love be a person?" Jon asked.
"I suppose it can be." Damian guessed. When thinking about what he would use to associate the word love with, it was most certainly not a person.
"There's this person in my life. Seeing them makes me day, sometimes even my month. I always get this feeling around them, that I am unable to explain. Damian, what if that person is my definition of love?" Jon asked.
Damian began to feel an emotion he had felt very rarely: jealousy. Damian was confused on why he has felt this. Jon was nothing but a friend, yet it still hurt him knowing that his best friend possibly loved someone and that someone wasn't him.
"Tell me about this person." Damian insisted, wanting to know all about the person who had stolen his best friend's heart before he could.
"I am very rarely up close with this person, due to the fact that they are not as sentimental as most people are, but god when I am, it seems as if all the world revolves around him. He makes me feel so helpless." Jon spoke adoringly, gazing at the sky.
Him? Him?! The use of the male pronoun in Jon's sentence had irritated Damian more than anything. Not only had his best friend fallen for someone who wasn't him, that someone was also a boy. Another boy having the heart of his dearest Jon? Damian was not only irritated and jealous, he was in pain . He knew deep down inside that no girl nor boy would treat Jon the way he should be treated; the way he could treat him.
Jon had felt Damian's body tense. He didn't know wether this had been a good sign or a bad sign. Had Damian figured out that Jon thinks he's his version of love?
Damian let go of Jon's hand, knowing that the longer he held it, the more it would hurt having to let go. That hand would soon be holding the hand of another boy.
Jon realized what Damian had done and was in utter shock. He knew then, their friendship had been done all because he couldn't keep his emotions to himself. Of course this was going to happen! Jon knew Damian had only seen him as a friend, nothing more. Jon knew no matter what, Damian would never love him. He began to shed a couple tears realizing that because of his 'mistake', he would no longer have a best friend.
The younger boy turned around and pulled his knees to his chest, no wanting Damian to see him cry.
Damian heard the sudden sniffles that slowly turned into choked sobs and his heart began to break. He hated to see Jon in pain.
"Jon, why are you crying? Please don't cry. I don't like it when you cry." Damian spoke, embracing Jon into a hug. To his surprise, Jon had pushed him back, instead of allowing hik to hug him.
Damian was hurt by his action and soon began to feel tears come out of his eyes as well. All he wanted was a hug from his friend, but he knew that as long as Jon loved someone who wasn't him; Damian would never get that hug.
Jon lifted his head to see if Damian had left; just as he had hoped, the older boy was still there, wearing the saddest look on his face.
Jon ran to embrace him into a hug, knowing that this might be the last time he would ever be able to hug him.
"Damian, why are you crying?" Jon managed to choke out.
"Because you happen to love someone who isn't me." Damian spilled.
"Oh god. Damian I love you." Jon sniffled.
"Damian Wayne, I am madly in love with you. The fact that you are unaware of how much I love you has me amazed." Jon said as he began to hold Damian tighter, but not too tight, aware of how fragile he was.
"You love me? God I love you too Jonathon Kent. I never pictured myself loving someone as much as I love you." Damian beamed.
Somehow, Jon's fingers had managed to find their way back to Damian's, intertwining them as they did before.
Jon was now aware of what love meant. Love to him was Damian Wayne.

Threw this sappy one shot together around 4am, unaware of how it would end. Somewhat satisfied ('may you always be satisfied'). Hope you enjoyed ?? Also sorry for the misspells, it's very late.
