Chapter 9

Jared's POV

Oh no, I think, I don't think this is going to turn out well.

I watch Melanie as she leads the horse towards the arena.

We enter it and I stand by one of the walls, while Melanie goes to a mounting block in the middle to see if she will let her on her back. She shies at it, not wanting to go any closer. Melanie looks around.

"Jared, can you please shut those doors near you? I'm gonna let her go and I don't want her getting out." she asks me. I nod and walk over to shut them.

Once I have, Melanie unclips the lead rope from the halter and the horse bolts away. Melanie goes to sit on the mounting block and tacks no notice of the horse.

How was she so beautiful?

I took no notice of the horse for a while, just looking- no staring- at Melanie, taking in all her features.

The horse suddenly stopped, realized no one was taking notice of her, and started to slowly walk towards Melanie and the mounting block. She cautiously approached it with her nose stuck out, sniffing it. Melanie reached into her pocket, pulled it out with what looked like a sugar cube and gave it to the horse. Melanie stands up and walks away from her, never once looking back. The horse soon losses interest in the scary mounting block and started to follow her. Melanie started to run slowly and the horse started to trot behind her to catch up. She started to go around the arena, doing what looked like a dressage test, while the horse followed, doing what Melanie did. When she finished, she turned around, praised the horse a lot and gave her another sugar cube.

"That was amazing!" I say/shout. I was stunned, so much that I didn't think about my actions and their affects.

The horse spooked and it was too late to do anything. She reared, ears back, the whites of her eyes showing, and knocking Melanie to the ground in the process.

"Melanie!" I shouted, and started to move towards her.

When the horse realized what she had done, she stopped. When I was about a meter or so away, she suddenly put her ears back, bared her teeth and moved so Melanie was under her.

Wow. I'm lost for words. As I back away, Melanie gains the horse's full attention. She nudges her and nickers to try and get her up. When Melanie stirs, she nickers louder and nudges repetitively.

"I'm getting up." Melanie groans. When she opens her eyes and sees the horse there, she is obviously stunned. As shes getting up, she spots me,"Jared, can you help me?" she asks.

"I don't think I want to go near her." I say.

"Why?" she answers with a confused face.

"She protected you when you were unconscious. I tried to get near you but she wouldn't let me come anywhere near you. She loves you, Melanie. I think you've found yourself a horse, or rather she found you."

She still has a confused look in her face so I start walking towards her. Again when I'm about a meter away, she flattens her ears, bares her teeth and steps over Melanie once more.

"Ohh, that's what you mean! It's ok girl, he won't hurt me, or you." Melanie says, getting up by using the horse's legs as a bit of support. Once she is fully up, she leans on her back.

After a while, Melanie puts more and more weight on her back but she doesn't seem phased. Next comes the daring part. Melanie jumps onto her bare back. Still, she doesn't seen phased. Melanie just sits on her, rubbing her neck and praising her. I can tell you, this girl is amazing! She just lets her walk around, getting used to the feel of Melanie on her back. After a while, I see her apply some pressure with her left leg. The horse doesn't like that pressure, so she moves to the right. Soon Melanie has her doing all sorts of shapes around the arena, until she comes to a stop in front of me.

"That was amazing! You look professional! It is truly amazing!" I compliment her.

She blushes, "Thanks, she's actually really smart! My guess is she was schooled well then was sold to an abusive home. I'm glad she's here, I really love her." she answers.

"It's really sad how horses are abused. I really hate seeing horses that are terrified of people because they have been abused, it's just not right!" I say, "Do you know of a name that would suite her?"

"Lightning."
