Chapter 23: All That Matters
Jacob's POV
I know what Vanessa's looking for and that's what I was hoping for. She'll read his past, find out his deep dark secrets, and rescue herself. Those journals hold Jason's entire past, the good and horrible parts. Jason isn't a lover, more like a twisted, sick fighter. She's going to find that out soon, very soon. That is why I didn't want Cameron meddling, he would've gotten caught in between something very ugly. Let the girl find out for herself. It'll stay between the two of them and not the rest of the gang. She's not stupid. She knows what she's doing. She'll be out of this house when her family's visit rolls around...
Vanessa's POV
Victoria. That name. It's stuck in my head and it's bothering me more and more. It makes me wonder where she is now and why they aren't together. Why I'm here and she isn't? Or why Jason's never spoke of her? Maybe they ended badly?
"What's clouding up your mind, beautiful?" I heard a raspy voice ask, wrapping their arm around my waist.
I smiled, "Nothing important,"
"Seems pretty important since you haven't noticed that I've said your name about 6 times already and not a single response," he chuckled.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Just a bit sleepy and out of it," I shrugged.
"Is it because your family is coming?" he asked.
"No, I-I mean," I began to stumble.
"Because if it is, we can have them come later when you're comfortable," he told me.
"No, no. It's not that. It's just that I haven't seen them in forever especially my dad you know? It's just going to be overwhelming," I sighed.
"Nothing to worry about, love. I'll be with you the entire time." he smiled at me, it brought a warm and comforting feeling that I never knew I needed till now.
"Jason," Matt said, causing Jason to let out a heavy sigh.
"What?" he growled, sending chills down my arms.
"Can I talk to Vanessa?" Matt rolled his eyes.
"No," Jason simply said, his grip on my waist tightening.
"God Jason, she's a big girl. She can answer for herself," he muttered.
"Fine, make it quick dipshit." Jason snapped.
I made eye contact with Matt, he looked a bit flustered but worried.
I stepped out of the bed, prying Jason's arm off my waist and made my way towards Matthew. I softly shut the door behind be and came face to face with him.
"What do you need?" I asked.
"I know you've figured out your way through the house," he laughed.
"W-what's that supposed to mean?" I accidentally stuttered.
"Don't play dumb with me. I'm just trying to warn you, you don't want to read those journals. They're not going to benefit you," he smirked.
"How do you know I read his journals?" I asked a bit worried.
"No one goes into that library but Jason. It's obvious when someone's been in there,"
"If no one goes into the library, how do you know when someone's been in there or not?" I questioned.
"Because I'm the only other person who goes in there. But unlike you, I'm smart enough to leave things exactly as Jason left them," he rolled his eyes.
"Why does it matter to you whether or not I go in there?" I said, getting annoyed at his sudden mood switches.
"Because I've been here longer with Jason compared to anyone in this house. No one knows or wants to know him like I do. He has issues only I understand. So stop trying to figure him out because you don't want to. Trust me," he said, sternly.
I simply nodded and he turned to leave.
"Matt, wait," I called after him.
He turned quickly and made his way back to me, "Who's Victoria?"
His eyes went wide like he's seen a ghost, "U-u-mm no one important,"
It confused me since Jason talked about her so much and supposedly, Matthew knows him better than anyone.
"Are you sure?" I pushed.
He sighed, "Meet me in the library at midnight, I'll explain everything alright?"
I nodded and he quickly made his way down the hall. I went back into the room seeing Jason dressed up and reaching into his dresser.
"What are you all dressed up for?" I smiled at the sight of him.
He looked up at me, flashing his award winning smile.
"Just some meetings today. And a good friend of mine, Floyd Mayweather, is fighting tonight," he chuckled.
He then pulled out a gun from his dresser and strapped it into his waist band, frightening me a bit.
"W-what's that for?" I stuttered.
I guess he noticed I was caught off guard because he made his way towards me, wrapping his comforting arms around me.
"Don't worry my love, it's just for protection. A lot of people are out to get me and we wouldn't want anything tragic happening," he whispered to me soothingly.
He's right. When you're Jason McCann, the most wanted criminal in the world, anything can happen...
