Chapter 4: Stuck In The Moment

Jason's POV

What's wrong with me? Why do I feel this way? I've never felt this way for a girl.

'But she's not just another girl' my conscience told me. Ugh, that's true. Vanessa.... different. But how? She looks like any other girl, she acts like any other girl. I don't see what the difference is. Maybe it was because she was locked up for so long and has managed to survive. Because she's strong? That's why I'm attracted to her?

'Yes, Jason. You find Vanessa attractive because she's survived through Derek's cruel ways for 3 years.' my conscience spoke again.

Why does my conscience always have to be right?

That whole freak out thing I did today was unnecessary. I just don't know how to deal with emotions like this. I was never liked at school, all the girls thought I was weird. All the boys thought I was gay. How am I suppose to know how to deal with these feelings if I've never liked anyone before.

It feels like I'm really going insane. I probably scared Vanessa. She probably won't like me anymore, if she ever did.

Yeah, I know. I don't know Vanessa at all but you don't know the feeling inside me telling me I need to protect this girl. I don't like the feeling but I'll do anything I can to protect her.

"Jason?" Ryan knocked softly, poking his head into my room. 

"Shh, Vanessa's sleeping." I whispered, climbing out of bed and towards the door. 

"What's up?" I asked, closing the door softly behind me.

 "Tomorrow, Thompson wants to have a 'Meeting'." he said.

 "What?! He can't know we have Vanessa!" I said, frantically.

 "I know, Jason. That's why Kian, Luke, Carter, and Taylor are staying here with her. You, Matt, Cameron, Jacob, Gabriel and I are going." He told me. I relaxed a bit, "And I've never seen you so worried about a girl." he chuckled.

 "I know, Ry. But there's this voice inside me telling me to keep her around and protect her. I have no idea why and have no idea who she is but I'm still going to protect her." I told him, running my hands through my already messy hair.

 "Okay, Jase. Treat her right though." he chuckled, walking to the end of the hall, and into his bedroom. I shook my head and laughed, opening the door and walking in.

I saw Vanessa laying in bed, curled up in my blankets. I smiled, and kissed her forehead.

"Good night, Vanessa." I whispered, softly.

I walked back to the door and closed it softly. I walked to the end of the hall, leading to Ryan's room. 

"Ry?" I whispered, knocking softly. "Yeah?" he asked. "Do you have a blanket I can use?" I asked. "Yeah." he answered, climbing out of bed and to his closet. "Here." he said, tossing a blanket at me. "Thanks." I whispered, closing the door behind me.

I walked down the stairs, and into the living room. Laying down on the couch, I covered myself with the blanket and tried my best to go to sleep.

'Jason, she needs you upstairs.' A voice in my head whispered.

What?

"Jason. J-Jason." a voice upstairs whimpered. I shot up from the couch and ran up the stairs.

I barged into the room and saw Matt already comforting her.

"Shh, it's okay." he whispered, gently rocking her. "Matt, I can take it from here." I said, sternly.

Vanessa got out of his grip and pulled me tightly into a hug. "Im right here." I whispered, caressing her head. "Thanks Matt." I thanked. "Yeah." he mumbled, walked out with his down.

I picked Vanessa up and carried her to the bed. "Whats wrong?" I asked, sitting her on my lap. "D-Derek. I'm scared, Jason." she whimpered. "Don't be. You shouldn't be scared when you're with me, I'll never let you go. I promise" I said.

At that moment, I didn't realize what was coming...
