Keith's POVI was laying in the grass by the lake of the Canadian Rockies. I was the only child, so I didn't have anyone to play with. Living in an area like this, the population was below a hundred and people rarely came over. The last time anyone visited, it was my grandma. And that was years ago. I was only a young eleven year old at the time. Since then, it has only been me, my aunt, and uncle.
My parents died when I was five. I never really had a special connection with them since they were always busy working. I didn't get the attention I wanted. Not that it mattered to me anymore. People would always question why I didn't cry at their funeral. But I chose to ignore what they say.
I ended up moving from Texas to go live with my uncle and my pregnant aunt in Canada. I don't remember much about Texas. So I didn't really miss it. Canada was really quiet and boring sometimes. But the scenery outside the house was breath taking.
I looked up at the clear blue skies and watched the clouds drift slowly towards the west. I reached out my hand and pretended to grab those fluffy floating things. I wanted to really feel them and to fly with them.
I always dreamed to be a pilot in the future and to soar the skies. To look down and see everything and everyone in the palm of his hands. I sighed and listened to the waves collide with the boulders that sat near the shore.
"Keith!"
I sat up and turned around to see my aunt waving at me in the distance. I groaned and stood up, dusting my pants in the process. "I'm coming auntie Jess!"
When I got to the house, my aunt asked me to sit in the dining room and prepare some food. I didn't understand why. We've never had visitors before.
"Jess, why are we making so much food?" I asked.
"We're having guests over tomorrow" my aunt answered from the kitchen. I'm confused... since when did we decide to have more guests? "A family from the small farm across the lake wants to come and help us out. Since we're so isolated from the townspeople, they decided it was the best thing to do" Auntie Jess adds.
I leaned back into his chair and smiled softly. Does this mean I was going to find a friend? I just hope that the family had someone around my age to visit and hang out with. I was tired of playing in the dirt and pretending to fly with my horse, Randolph. No offense to him, but I'd have more enjoyment if I had a human friend.
I looked down at the bowl of egg yolk in my lap in which I had to beat. I questioned if the other family was going to bring us goods from the market. In this small town, more people traded than to buy things. With so little amount of people, nearly everyone were friends. Except my family. We never really associated with them. Which meant we didn't have a very good trading reputation. But my uncle managed. At some days, they'd ring our doorbell to befriend us, but we would always say 'Sorry, we're busy'. I was really guilty of doing that... I did actually want to know some people and make some friends.
The front door swings open and I stop whisking the eggs for a second. My uncle was carrying cardboard boxes with potatoes in it. He drops them on the dining room table in front of me with a loud thump. "Hey, uncle Noah."
"Hey, Keith. Today's a busy day, sport... keep on whiskin'. Afterward this, can you please peel these potatoes and wash them for me? Thanks" He says in a rush. When he was about to leave the dining room, I call out for him.
"Noah... who exactly are the visitors?"
He turned to face me and smiled. "Oh, this family who works at the fruit farm on the other side of the lake. They're not that far away from us if we take a boat. You'll meet them tomorrow, eh?"
Well obviously. Auntie Jess just told me that. I sighed as I watch my uncle proceed to walking to the bathroom. I go back to whisking the eggs.
When I was done beating the eggs and peeling and washing the potatoes, I walked over to Jess, who was sitting on a stool, reading a magazine. "Keith? Come sit next to me, honey."
I do as she says and take a seat on the stool beside her, resting my elbow on the thick wooden kitchen table with my head resting in my palm. "You know... we never get visitors. Tomorrow will be a special day. You excited?"
I nod. "Are they nice?"
"I don't know. I've never met them. But your uncle traded with them before and said they are nice people. Don't worry, honey. They'll like you. You are the most sweetest being I know. I doubt they will judge you" My auntie hugs me once and walks away to the backyard.
To be honest, I was a little anxious and worried. What if the visitors don't like me? What if I was too awkward to talk to them? I thought about this throughout the rest of the day. I laid in my bed and gazed out the window at the night sky and the many stars that shone above. I closed my eyes and I prayed.
"Dear god, please find me a friend. Someone I can play with. A very sweet nice super awesome guy or girl around my age. Thank you so much for everything you've done for me and my family, amen."
I turned off my lamp and fluffed my pillow. I pulled the thin sheets over his body, leaving my feet out for breeze and fell sound asleep dreaming about flying in a helicopter.
