Chapter 11: Lighting Candles and Feeding Flames
The halls were crowded as I pulled out my Science books and made my way to class. Lacy was on the stairs as I approached and I swear I almost died. But as I slowly climbed the steps, I realized that Lacy's lips were sealed. She wouldn't tell Brogan's secret, because of what Christian said. Everyone would know that the hockey captain had no interest in the cheerleader.
So, surprisingly, I made it to the classroom with no interruptions. Jeremy filed in behind me, and following him was Brice. I could hear their familiar whispers as I took my seat.
The chalk tapped the chalk board as Ms. T wrote some notes up. I hurried to write all of them down before she started to explaine so I could actually listen instead of focusing on my pencil. Unfortunately, she was a fast writer and was done before I had finished the second sentence.
As Ms. T began speaking, I had this strange feeling that I was being watched. At first I thought it was someone making fun of me, but as I turned around, I saw a pair of sad, blue eyes.
Christian.
Our eyes met and I could see he was upset. I quickly turned away. I was still mad at him for... for... wait, what was I mad at him for? Oh, yeah, for- for being too... uh, caring?
Whatever it was, I was still mad. He was acting like I needed him to hold on to. Well, maybe I did, but, I just need someone to get mad at. Life isn't fair! Why did it choose to ruin me? Why was I the one who had to get called down to the office? Why wasn't it- it Christian?
Wait, did I just say that?
No.
A stern voice awoke me from my thinking. "Ms. Shall, eyes on the board, please." Ms. T was staring at me when I turned around, the meter stick tapping her hand.
The science class ticked by, each minute feeling like an hour of pain. Every once in a while I had glanced back at Christian, and almost every time, he was staring back at me. I could really tell he was upset.
Ding!
The bell rang. I hurried out of the classroom, for I knew the populars would be swarming the staircase any moment. Even though Lacy hadn't said anything on the way up, doesn't mean she would just stop pestering me altogether.
Surprisingly, when I reached the stairs, it was only Tyler, Ray, and Daphne. The pretty, tall girl waved and skipped over. I was shocked that Daphne would actually talk to me in front of her friends. It was probably just because Lacy and Jeremy weren't there. That was when I spotted the two strut over.
"Hey." It was Daphne.
"Hi." I was too concentrated on Jeremy reaching his arm over Lacy's shoulders for long answers.
Daphne started blabbering about some party on the weekend, but I didn't really listen. I just watched as Jeremy pecked Lacy on the cheek, she giggled, then skipped to her locker.
Then, Jeremy stalked over to a few other girls by a bench. They giggled girlyingly as Jeremy flirted.
Player.
I said good bye to Daphne, reminding her to come to practice a few minutes early in the morning. She nodded and I made my way to the locker in peace.

The rest on the day dragged on painfully. It seemed that every corner I turned Christian was there, staring at me pleadingly. One time, I just had to talk to him. This is how our conversation went:
