-CHAPTER ONE-
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
Nineteen year-old Annabelle 'Ann' Katelynn Matthews walked onto the campus of the Virginia Military Institution in the Fall of 1996, and it brought a smile to her face. She had missed being here, away from the mountains and the fresh air. She breathed it in, and walked to where her dorm was with her bags in hand.
She looked around, seeing familiar faces along with new ones. Her people-watching was soon interrupted though, by someone slamming into her. She fell over, and her bags flew out of her hands.
"Hey, watch where you're..." She stopped mid-sentence, when she recognized the chocolate brown eyes, and the dark auburn hair that covered them slightly.
"Michael?" The boy looked at her, and blushed slightly.
"A... Ann?" Ann gave the boy, eighteen year-old Michael Chad Phillips, a quick hug as she tried to hide the embarrassed look on her face- and the blush that was slowly making it's way onto her face as well.
"Michael... it's been a while, I haven't seen you in over a year..."
"Yeah, same..." They stood there for a few seconds in an awkward silence, when Ann noticed that Michael also had bags on the ground.
"You go here now?"
"Yeah, but I had no idea you went here, I swear..."
"It's alright, I never accused you of anything..." Michael smiled nervously.
"Right... I think I should just go now..." He began to pick his bags up.
"Don't be like that, please?" Ann asked, picking her bags up as well. Michael looked over at her, and couldn't help but give in.
"Fine... I need help anyways, I have no idea where my dorm is." Ann laughed.
"Typical Michael, not knowing up from down... anyways, this is where the girl dorms are. You're looking for the guy dorms on the other side of campus... I should just show you where they are, you might get even more lost without me." Ann laughed again, before she started walking in the direction that would take Michael to his destination.
But, Michael had hesitated for a few seconds.
"I've been lost without you..." He thought this to himself, before realizing that Ann had already started walking. He quickly caught up to her, before she could notice that he was behind her. The walk was silent for the most of the first part, while Michael was having trouble trying to stop himself from staring at Ann.
"It's been so long, she's even more beautiful than the day..."
"Michael, is there something wrong?" Ann asked, noticing he was looking at her with a dazed look on his face. Michael quickly shook his head of the thought, before again smiling awkwardly.
"Nothing, nothing at all..."
"Okay, just making sure..." Michael sighed, he didn't want to embarrass himself when it came to Ann.
But he found it hard to, because he still loved her, probably more than the day they had ended their short relationship. He still thought she was the most beautiful and wonderful girl he could ever have... but, that was now in the past.
"She seems so chill, while I'm acting like a total moron... I just need to let it go, there's no way she still feels the same way about me as I do her, we broke up for a reason... at least, there should have been a reason..." He sighed again, before he noticed a cross with flowers around it, in what seemed to be the courtyard. Michael nudged Ann, who looked to see where he was pointing.
