The smell of the sewers wasn't as bad as the smell of burning buildings, rotten blood and decaying human flesh, but it wasn't pleasant either. Still, you didn't have much of a choice.
You jolted with shock when you got off the ladder, feeling ice cold sewer water drip from leaky pipes landing on your head and shoulders, seeping into your shirt.
"It's dark in here." Sherry spoke up, watching your flashlight flicker on and point towards her, the poor girl raising a hand over her head so no water could get into her eyes.
"Yeah, I know. Do you wanna hold the flashlight so you can see better?" She looked up at you and nodded. "Here. Just point it ahead, It'll help us see where we're going."
Sherry pointed the flashlight around, following alongside you when you started to walk. The hallway was quiet, all the sounds that echoed along were just water droplets from the pipes on the ceiling or the water puddles around your feet, making minor splashes with every single slow step you and Sherry took.
Your had to be slow. If you ran, It could've alerted nearby zombies or whatever the hell was crawling around down here, causing an unsuspecting horde to chase after you. Sherry could've fallen, and you could've lost her then and there. It was better to keep quiet so you could hear any threat.
The hallways soon turned into an empty maze, every dark corner you turned just led into another, then more after that and so on.Should I really be going this far? What if Leon and Claire thought I died? Or if I got the child in danger?
"(Y/n), Look! Stairs!" Sherry pointed the flashlight ahead at some dry looking stairs leading to a fence door, showing a well lit up hallway. "Perfect! C'mon, hurry!" You and her ran up the stairs to the door, smiling big when you discovered it was unlocked.
Sherry turned off the flashlight and clutched it close. You looked straight towards some bolted shut steel doors in the end, wondering what could be inside. They reminded you of some sort prison doors they used for the unstable prisoners. For a moment, it brought you memories of similar looking doors along white, clean corridors leading to the testing labs in Umbrella. You could only imagine how crazed those zombies must be if you were to look inside, or worse.
"What about there?" Sherry pointed to one of the nearest door, made of wood and darkened glass, looking like a doctor's office. If you squinted a little, you could see light was coming from the cracks.
"Let's try it." You walked to the door and grabbed the cold handle, turning it slowly to test if it was locked. Thankfully, It wasn't.
The door opened smoothly without any annoying creaks. You relaxed at the sight of an empty, what you could assume, was either a boiler room or a water filtration room, completely free of bodies or mutated beasts. "This looks safe enough, we'll wait here." You allowed Sherry to walk in and closed the door behind her.
She looked at the two large contraptions that were on either side of the room, separated by a metal bridge. The bridge led to the other side of the room, where a complicated looking door was. As long as it was sealed, you assumed you didn't have to worry about much. Sherry grabbed onto the rails before crossing the bridge, stopping in the middle to look down below to a mysterious dark abyss. There was no sight of any ground as far as you could tell.
You wiped any excess water and sweat from your forehead, while walking over to Sherry, watching her gaze travel around the room with major amounts of curiosity. "Will Leon and Claire find us in here?"
"Don't worry, hopefully they'll get the hint with the first aid bag."
"Was that lady your friend?" Sherry looked up at you. "The lady in red?"
