I hear a loud crash as one of our windows is shattered and the alarm goes off, beeping over and over loudly. I bolt upright from my sleep. The crash came from downstairs. I rub my eyes and pull the blanket off of me to see what had happened. Suddenly, my twenty-year-old brother swiftly enters my room, silent. When I'm about to ask him what happened, he shoves his hand over my mouth and leans towards my ear. I can feel his breath against my skin as he whispers to me, trying to be as quiet as possible.
"Be quiet. I think someone bro-" he gets interrupted by a painful yell, and judging by how deep the voice it comes from, and how it was more of a grunt or groan than a shout, it's probably our father. I tense at the sound as I feel by brother tap my shoulder gently, so I turn to face him. He has his index finger vertical over his lips, telling me to be quiet. I nod promptly.
"What the heck just happened to Dad?" I whisper-shout to him. I watch as he opens his mouth to respond, most likely with an "I don't know", but then we hear footsteps coming towards us. The two of us stay hidden and quiet as we watch the door creak open... then our mother steps in. I jump up and hug her quietly.
"Mom you scared us," I whisper in her ear. "Well, me at least. What happened to Dad?"
"I need you guys to go to Ethan's room and go out through the window," she speaks quietly, but quickly.
"But Mom, what about you?" my brother appears beside me.
"Don't worry about me, honey," she replies softly. "I'll be fine. Go, quick."
My brother takes my hand and drags me along, as I'm still facing towards my mother, worried. She smiles weakly then mouths the words "It'll be okay" to me before my brother and I disappear into his room. Before we left, he'd grabbed my phone off of my nightstand and my glasses, then the glasses case that sat beside it. When we left the room, he grabbed the zip-up hoodie that was hanging on the doorknob. At his room, he grabbed the backpack that was sitting open on the floor and tossed my hoodie to me.
"Put this on."
"Ethan why won't Mom come with us?" I watch as he puts all of my stuff into the backpack, then double checking that his wallet is in the bag as well. He slings the backpack over his shoulder then walks over to the far wall and unlocks the window, then begins to push it outwards.
"Ellie I don't know what the fuck is happening, but if Mom wants us to leave..." he gestures towards the open window. I gulp and look back over my shoulder to see if Mom is still there. The hallway is empty. I turn back around and nod slowly as I approach the window. I grasp the frame and lift my leg over, then swing my other leg across, standing on a flat piece of the roof outside of my brother's room.
"Which way do I go?" I ask quietly, holding my hand out. He clutches it and uses it to help pull himself outside. He closes the window quietly, then walks in front of me to lead me to a ladder. It's only now that I realize how high it is. I can hear my heart racing, the beeping of the alarm muffled. If the alarm goes off for this long without being turned off, the police should be coming, or at least be concerned.
