"Wait, wait, wait," Aubrey said, holding her hand up as if to stop us all. "I thought we were all going as a group. When did it change to three pairs?"

"I just thought it'd be simpler, you know?" Tiffany shrugged, placing the green Starbucks straw between her lips that were, at the time, painted a dark red. She sipped her frappuccino, then released the straw. Halloween. One of the best holidays, in my opinion.

"I agree," Andrew nodded. "Finding a six-person costume is going to be difficult."

"We could go as cartoon characters," Aubrey suggests. "Right?"

"We're not children, Aubrey," Callum pitches in. "Not that cartoons are for children, I'm just saying that many iconic six-character cartoon groups are for children's shows. Like My Little Pony, for example. Or Spongebob Squarepants."

"Why is everyone against me?" she exhales in frustration. "Ellie? What's your opinion?"

"Well," I start, then pause for a moment to think. "I think that it would be fun for all six of us to go as one thing, but I also think it'd be simpler if we split up."

"Wow, thanks a lot, best friend," she huffs, crossing her arms. Andrew plants a kiss on her cheek.

"If it makes you feel better, I'd pair up with you," Andrew looks at her, and just about everybody gags.

"Yeah, no shit, you lovesick fucks," Tiffany rolls her eyes. "I have someone too, so the remaining people are Ellie and Callum."

"Oh," I say at the same time he does.

"Great, it's settled then," Aubrey smiles widely.

"What makes you so happy now?" Tiffany raises an eyebrow, then takes a long sip of her drink. I reach my hand out towards the coffee table in Andrew's dormitory. My fingers wrap around the warm cup, containing my mocha. I take a slow sip of my drink. As I go to set it down, my arms decide to stop functioning properly and I drop my cup. I see it in slow motion. Everyone's eyes are on my cup, I try to catch it and some other people do too, but eventually, the cup hits the floor and the drink spills everywhere.

"Shit," Andrew says, biting his lip.

"I'm so sorry," I say to him, reaching downwards to pick up the cup. "Where are the paper towels?"

"I'll grab them," Aubrey says and then stands up. She walks over to the attached kitchen and opens one of the cupboards. She stands on her toes and reaches upwards to the highest shelf. At that point, the door opens, and in walks Andrew's roommate. Jake. Andrew waves at him and he waves back. A calm, friendly smile on his face. Maybe my first impression of him was wrong. The way his eyelids droop calmly over his eyes, relaxed, and the way he smiles tells me that I was wrong. Tells me that he's nice. Then he looks over at Aubrey as he walks towards us.
