"Hey," I hear, then look at my phone. "Did you open your letter yet, Elle?"
"Oh," I bite my lip. "No, actually, I haven't. I haven't even opened the Christmas one."
"Jesus fuck," Nathan laughs. "Open 'em! Read them out loud, too."
"Alright," I roll my eyes. "I need to find the box. Here, Jake, take my phone. Tiff, come help me find it."
"Sorry, what exactly are we looking for?" Tiffany asks.
"A small wooden box with lots of envelopes in them," I say to her, handing my phone to Jake.
"Alright," she nods, then follows me into my room. She opens my closet and I start opening drawers that I know don't have clothes in them.
"It might be in the corner of the closet, either on the floor or on the shelf," I say to her, rummaging through random objects in my bedside drawer.
"Found it," Tiffany turns around, holding the box. I nod and smile, then we walk out.
"...right? And, like, it's insane. I can't believe she's never told you. But yeah. It's impossible for any of that to happen. The delicates are delicate. Also, we're both aces, idiot."
"Hey, dudes, we found the box," I say, sitting down on the couch. Jake is sitting on the back of the couch with his feet on the seat cushions, and Tiffany sits down beside me on the armrest.
"I'll open the Christmas one first and read it all word for word," I say, flipping through envelopes from the front and stop at the correct envelope.
"Go for it," Nathan smiles.
"'Dear Ellie, merry Christmas! I know that I've started every Christmas letter with that exact phrase, and I know you're probably getting tired of it. I'm tired, too. It's really insane to think about how I'm taking all this effort to write all of these letters for you and Nate. But, you know, it's so that you guys get pieces of me throughout your lives. And I think that it's nice to be able to hear from me every once in a while. If Nate follows through with the plan he made with me, he should be around five or six months post-op. If so, that's great. Because I specifically remember he told me that when he gets to that point, he'd show you his brand new dick. So remind him of that. By this time you're probably at school. You're a good student, so I know that you're picking up for the next degree immediately if you haven't already graduated. I'm assuming you have and you're already on your master's. If not, then that's okay, of course. I just want to reiterate the fact that I love you so fucking much and I'm so sorry that any of this had to happen to you. Please stay safe. Love you like hell, Ethan. P.S. Ignore those water stains. I'm a hot-ass mess. Crying is normal.'"
I set the paper down, folding it gently back to what it was before, then slide it back into the envelope.
"Shit," I say under my breath.
"Aw, Ellie," Tiffany rubs my back gently.
"Alright, next one," I sigh. I place the envelope back where it was before, then grab the one after it.
