Chapter 10
Bob and Caitlyn had put everything in the boot of Bob's car, and were now sitting in the two front seats together in an uncomfortable silence. Bob cleared his throat, breaking the silence, and then said quietly,
"So... What happened?"
"It's. It's quite a long story..." Caitlyn replied, hanging her head. She could feel her face redden with embarrassment.
"We've got as much time as it takes," he said.
Bob noticed that Caitlyn had started crying.
"Hey, it's okay," Bob said gently. He reached out and stroked her face tenderly,
"It's alright. You don't need to frightened."
"You'll get mad," she whispered sadly.
"I won't, I promise."
Caitlyn looked up at him. Bob smiled at her. Caitlyn smiled half heartedly back. Taking a deep breath to compose herself, she began,
"When I was 19, I was in the park... The same one where I met you..." Caitlyn
paused, then continued, "I was sat on a park bench, when this cute guy came along. He was a bit older than me, but he asked me for a coffee... And I accepted. He told me that there was a coffee place on the other side of the park... Through the bushes."
Bob hugged Caitlyn closer. He could already sense what was coming. He wasn't mad. He was upset. Upset that someone had taken advantage of her, and hurt her. He thought to himself,
'It doesn't matter how I feel. Caitlyn needs me ; I can't get upset, or angry at the man. I have to stay calm.'
Caitlyn then started talking again,
"He... He pulled me through the bushes. And ten minutes later, he pushed me on the floor... And told me to get undressed." It wasn't even a matter of seconds before she began sobbing into Bob's chest. Bob held her tightly, knowing how upset she was.
"Oh, Caitlyn," he said somberly, "That's awful."
Caitlyn calmed herself down with a few deep breaths. Then she said,
"A few days later, I got really scared about everything, and I told Hannah. She was my best friend. She was really shocked, and insisted that I get a pregnancy test... After college, we went into the town centre and bought one."
Bob nodded reassuringly, though inside, he was fearful of what she was going to say next.
"And... It-it came up positive. I was absolutely terrified. I knew that my parents would react badly and probably call the police, so Hannah went back home with me to explain. I told my mum and dad about what Jack had done. And that he'd made me pregnant. My dad totally broke down and then stormed out of the house. My mum seemed as scared as I was."
Bob looked at Caitlyn with a mix of sympathy and hurt. His mind was yelling at him to comfort her, but his own emotions were preventing him from saying a word. Bob squeezed his eyes shut, focusing on staying calm and not crying. Caitlyn misinterpreted Bob's efforts not to cry as efforts not to get angry. She tensed in his arms, fearing what he was going to do or say next.
Bob's eyes opened in an instant, sensing Caitlyn's tension. He gave her a reassuring smile, and pulled her back into a hug.
"You're not mad, are you?" Caitlyn asked, regretting saying it immediately.
"No, Caitlyn, dear God, no! It's not your fault," Bob answered, surprised.
"It is a bit. I shouldn't have been so stupid," she sighed.
"You didn't know that he was going to do such an awful thing," he replied.
"Anyway. I got an abortion, though my Mum absolutely hated me for it afterwards. She said that I was a murderer, and didn't speak to me for about two weeks straight. Then about a month later, my mum and dad got a divorce. My mum blamed me entirely. I don't blame her. It was completely me fault..."
"Don't ever say that, Caitlyn Williams! It wasn't your fault at all," Bob retorted.
"It was. If I had have been more careful, then my Dad would still be alive!" Caitlyn argued. She took a deep breath and said,
"Just two years ago, I found my dad, swinging from the ceiling of our old garage. He had a suicide note in his pocket. He killed himself because he couldn't live without Mum. Mum's never forgiven me. She hasn't spoken to me since. "
Caitlyn's eyes filled with tears. Bob could hardly process what he'd just been told. He couldn't understand how Caitlyn's mother could be so cruel to poor Caitlyn.
"That's... That's some rough past," Bob managed to say. His heart was exploding with grief, both for Caitlyn , and for Gino. Caitlyn nodded.
"Your mother couldn't be more wrong," Bob whispered, "None of this was your fault. NONE of it."
The two sat in the front seats of Bob's car, clinging to each other ; both feeling like their world was crumbling beneath them.
