Chapter Five
Both Layla and Daniel stared at each other. Shocked, as if they were lost twins. No one dared to move---even Madeline kept silent, even though the pain stings. Silence filled the air. The only thing you could hear is the wind, and the rustling of leaves.
The silence seemed like forever, until tears start to drop from Layla's eyes. Slowly, it rolled down to her cheek. She smiled. "Daniel... How did you escape?"
He laughed. "Does it matter? It's been a long time, buddy!" They fistbumped.
Madeline smiled at seeing the wonderful sight of reunion. Everything felt warm, for once. Seeing Layla smile, hearing Daniel's laughter. It made Madeline remembered about her parents. How they used to smile at her. How they used to laugh at her jokes. How they used to love her. Now, it's all just memories.
"Guys, I think Madeline's having trouble here. Her wound is getting worse. We need to find shelter, or help. Daniel, do you know any place where we could find a doctor?" Jack asked. His eyes focused on Daniel.
Daniel narrowed his eyes, trying to think of a place. "Yeah, there's actually a small town not too far from here. We could find a doctor, and book an inn. It would take us a day and a half---or more---to reach that town." He eyed Madeline's wound. "Hey, Madeline, can I take a look at your wound? Maybe I could help. I've learned a trick or two about wounds and how to heal them."
Madeline nodded weakly. She barely could talk. Daniel examined her wounds closely. Slowly, He shook his head in terror, "Oh my. This is... This is bad. Really, really bad."
Jack spat, "Yeah, well thanks to your cannonballs. Look at what you've done, Daniel."
Daniel defended, "I'm sorry, okay? I was just firing cannons at a raven! I was hunting! I didn't know there were people riding that enormous raven! Sorry, Okay? I didn't---" Daniel paused.
"Wait... How could you guys ride an illogically big raven? I mean, those ravens don't even exist, right? I thought only The Black Enchantress could summon those ravens. I mean, it's not like any of you are The Black Enchantress, right?" Daniel questioned.
Everyone just stared at him blankly. "Right?" Daniel asked once again.
Slowly, Jack and Layla started to look at Madeline. Daniel asked, "Wait. The girl who's injured---"
"Madeline," Jack corrected Daniel's sentence.
"Yeah, Madeline. She is The Black Enchantress? Well, that's... a surprise." Daniel coughed. "Well, I guess we can reach the town faster if Madeline could summon one of her---surprisingly---enormous ravens, right?"
Layla shook her head, "No. She can't. She's too weak to summon anything, or use any spell." Layla sighed. "The only way to get to the town, is by foot."
Jack commanded, "Well, if we're going to get there by foot, we need to go as soon as possible." He carries Madeline on his back. "I'm gonna carry her. Let's go guys."
Everyone gets ready, and off they go. Deeper into the wilderness. With Madeline still injured, and hopes that by the time they reach the town, she will still be alive.
