Chapter Six

Rain. Madeline's tongue tasted the salty rain as she closed her eyes, trying to decrease the pain that has been throbbing her bloody stomach. All she could think about was her destiny. What if the Eagle Boards absorbed all of her power? Then she wouldl be dead and the Eagle Boards wouldl run the world and possibly destroyed everyone.

She stared blankly at the dark sky. The clouds were blocking the sun's bright rays. The thunders were haunting her mind. The lightning was so bright, her eyes hurt. She touched her stomach gently, trying not to be too aggressive. "Argh." She winced, as the pain spread through her body.

"Hey, Madeline. What's wrong?" Jack said, worried about Madeline's condition.

Madeline calmed herself. "No, it's okay. I'm fine. Don't worry about it." She closed her eyes, her eyebrows narrow. 'It's okay, breathe in... breathe out.... breathe in.... breathe out....' She told herself.

Jack abruptly stopped, which caused Layla and Daniel to stop too. He shouted, "We need to find shelter! Guys, I know that Madeline is in a serious condition and we need to get to town as fast as we can. But I think, that we should rest, especially Madeline. The rain could make her conditions worse. And I think all of us are tired. Let's find shelter!"

Everyone quickly tried to spot a place for shelter. "Hey, look! There's light, coming from that direction!" Layla pointed to the east. "Let me check on that."

Layla quickly ran towards the source of light. With no sound at all, she ran with incredible speed. Three minutes went by, and there were no signs of Layla. Silence started to conquer. No one dared to speak. After seven minutes went by, a silhouette of a woman came.

"It's an inn!" Layla shouted. "I booked a room for a night. Let's rest."

Madeline started to feel weak. Started to feel numb. "Jack. My visions are blurry. I feel weak. I need to.. I need.. to... go... to... the doctor.. fast..."

Jack smiled worried, "Hey, hey... It's going to be alright, okay?"

Layla approached Madeline, "Hey Maddie, are you alright? Is it okay if we rest for tonight?" Her voice was full of worry. Layla looked at Jack, "Jack, let me carry her. I run faster than you, and also you're too weak to run and carry her at the same time."

Jack let Layla carry Madeline, who's already half conscious. "I'll run and carry Madeline to the inn, while you and Daniel... um... walk to the inn. See you guys at the inn." Layla ran like a fox. Swiftly, yet softly. Not a single sound was made when she ran.

The wind was blowing hard, making Layla and Madeline shivered. But that didn't stop Layla to run. She was determined to save Madeline and help her to get to the inn. Layla ran for what seemed like forever, until the source of light became clearer.

Layla burst open the door to the inn, and ran upstairs to the room she had booked for. Quickly, she laid Madeline's cold body into the bed, and tucked her with the blankets. Layla smiled as Madeline said a soft and weak, Thank You.

Suddenly, the door was opened, revealing a shivering Jack and Daniel. "Thank goodness I asked for four additional blankets," Layla said.

Daniel and Jack, quickly wrapped their bodies with the blankets. So did Layla.

Jack said, "Who knew there's an inn in the middle of the jungle?" The three of them laughed. "I ordered the room which has two beds. Do you guys mind if both of you sleep on the floor?"

Daniel protested, "What? We sleep on the floor? Are you crazy? We are wet, and shivering, and you're asking for me and Jack to sleep on the floor? Oh, that is sooo fair."

"Hey, Madeline's stomach had been shot by your cannonballs. She needs to have her own space. If she wasn't poorly injured by your cannonballs, we could've had a fair share of the beds," Layla said.

Jack interrupted, "Hey, hey. Daniel, let's just sleep on the floor. Madeline is poorly injured and Layla is tired from carrying Madeline. Let's just sleep. After all, they're girls. Men must succumb to women." Daniel rolled his eyes.

And off they go, sleeping peacefully, hoping that tomorrow will be better than today.
