Chapter 8: The Next Day

Poke's POV:

I didn't get much sleep that night and I now have a brand new set of cuts to hide. At least I have the farm to cheer me up. After farm work and bringing all of my crops to Pierre's, I decide to play with Jas. Jas has a way of making everything around her happy. I think she's home today though. I guess I'll visit the ranch. After I go on the road and see the road, I see Jas' small body running.

I also realized she was crying.

I decided to follow her. "Jas! Hey!" She stopped and faced me. "...Miss. Poke..?" I caught up to her. "Jas what happened? What's wrong? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to though..." I can't help, but wonder what happened. After a moment of silence, Jas spoke up. "U-Uncle Shane... He s-s-said he d-doesn't want to stay here..." I take a brief moment of silence. "Jas... Can you tell me what Uncle Shane said exactly? I'm going to try to help you and him." "O-Ok... Well, Aunt Marnie woke up Shane. Then Aunt Marnie mentioned something about 'You shouldn't be drinking this much. It's unhealthy.'" So Shane was an alcoholic. Well he normally does drink beer at the saloon. "Then she said 'Shane what's wrong with you? All you ever do is mope around and drink beer.' B-By the way Poke, what's beer and what does mope mean?" Well then I guess Penny might not be enough for learning. "Beer is a drink only people 21 and older can drink. It's not good if you drink too much of it. Mope means being miserable. I don't think Uncle Shane is feeling well right now..." Jas looked at me with sadness in her eyes. "Oh... But I should tell you the last part I heard... Aunt Marnie than said something and Uncle Shane responded to it this time. Aunt Marnie said 'What's your plan? Don't you ever think of the future?'" Jas started sniffling and crying again and I just hold onto her in an attempt to comfort her. "T-Then... Th-Then Uncle Shane said 'Plan? Hopefully I won't be around long enough to need a plan?'" ...Shane's... "Jas I'm going to bring you home and I'm going to have a word with Shane in private, ok?" "O-Ok."

She was still sniffling, but I'm glad she isn't crying anymore. She's normally so happy-go-lucky. I pick her up and bring her to Marnie's Ranch, in which she found fun and the sniffling stopped too. I set Jas down and knock on the door. Marnie opens the door and sees Jas first. "Jas! You're ok! I'm so glad!" Marnie then looked up and saw me, "Oh! Poke! Thank you so much for bringing Jas back!" Marnie gives me a hug. "Is there anything else I can do for you?" "Marnie, can I talk to Shane at my farm? I think he really needs it..." Marnie then realizes I know what happened. She nodded and said. "Ok." Jas goes up to her room and Marnie brings out Shane. "Shane..." I'm really worried and concerned about him now. I know, irony. I know, cliché. But it seems he needs even more help than I do.

We finally reach the farm and I invite him inside. "I'm sorry I don't have a kitchen, otherwise I would've made something for you." He just nods and then I speak up. "Shane... Do you want to talk?" Shane looks at me with a shocked expression. "W-Where are you getting this from?" "I found Jas crying and I asked her what happened..." He then just stares at me for a moment then looks down. "Jas... Damn it... I'm so sorry..." He went down on his knees. I went down on mine. "Shane can you look me in the eyes?" He looked up and I continued. "Shane I know what you're feeling right now. We might not have the same understanding, but I know that feeling all to well. Just come talk to me, because I'm always here for you." I don't know why, but I felt tears starting to come down. Shane just stares at me before I had two things unexpectedly happen to me. The first is that he hugs me, the second is that he started to cry. I had a small sad smile on my face, I could feel it, and started crying too. I returned the hug and let him cry it out. After a while he stopped and let go of the hug. "Th-Thanks..." "No problem Shane. Just know you can come to me."

I brought Shane back to the ranch and I went back home. I curl up in my bed and started crying. Why is this happening? I just want happiness for everyone... But each time people are hurt.

Maybe what I need... What I want...

I think I want a light...
