5: Dark Magic

"I'm a what?" Yeri questioned Joy insistently, unable to understand what the second-year Slytherin had just told her.

Joy merely shook her head. "Not here, Yeri. Outside."

Without mercy, Joy positioned a firm, iron grip on Yeri's left wrist, dragging her out of the room and leaving behind a class full of bewildered, frightened students.

"You're a parseltongue, Yeri?" Joy whispered fiercely as soon as she'd slammed the classroom door behind her.

"What? Joy, what do you mean?" Yeri asked. She had never been so confused. She remembered Joy mentioning something about a parseltongue on the train while describing Jungkook, but she wasn't aware of what it was exactly.

"Yeri, you can speak to snakes." Joy said. "You were communicating with one just now inside the classroom. I don't know what the hell you were saying to it, but you looked desperate; like you were about to cry."

"I- This makes no sense!" Yeri exclaimed. "I can't explain what happened in there, I swear it was all in my head. I can't talk to snakes, I never have before!"

"That was because you'd never embraced your powers." Joy responded. "Hell, that's not important. What's important is that you can talk. to. snakes. Do you know how insane this is?"

Yeri didn't know how to react. She had just been told that she could speak to snakes. Fucking snakes. She hated snakes. Why her, out of all people? What did this mean for her?

"Just how insane is this entire situation?" Yeri whispered quietly, suddenly feeling afraid.

"Extremely insane." Joy replied. "Parseltongues are rare, and there are only two present in our school right now; Taeyong, the Head Boy of my House, and Jungkook."

That couldn't be right. Yeri had the same dark, twisted ability as Jungkook? Out of all people, it had to be him, and Taeyong included?

"No offense, Joy," Yeri said hesitantly, "but those two are the rudest people I've come across here at Hogwarts so far. What the hell am I supposed to do?"

"There's nothing we can do, Yeri." Joy said, ignoring the insult towards her House. "Nothing we can do about removing your ability, at least. It runs in your blood somehow, which is even stranger, because none of your relatives have had any signs of parseltongue."

"Does Wendy know about this?" Yeri asked suddenly.

"Uh, no." Joy said. "And I'd hate to be the one to tell her, but you're the one with the ability. Looks like it's on you."

Great. Wendy was probably going to end up disowning Yeri.

"She won't hate you or anything, if that's what you're wondering." Joy said, somehow reading Yeri's mind. "It's going to be quite a bit of news to take in though. Not just for her, but for the entire school, your House in particular. You're going to be the talk of the school, especially since you're not a Slytherin. It's already rare to be a parseltongue, but it's even more rare to be a parseltongue outside of the Slytherin House."

For a split second, Yeri wondered if her rock climbing lessons from second grade would be able to come in handy. Perhaps she could climb to the top of the building and jump off, or impale herself on one of the pointy roofs. Hell, she could even drown herself in that unrealistically enormous lake at the front of the school. The possibilities were endless.
