That is my last thought before falling asleep.I mean, why would I ever want to leave? Waking up each morning to the sound of the salty ocean splashing against the shoreline, living with my sister who is practically my best friend, eating the most delicious food imaginable to all of human kind. My life couldn't be better.
Well, it could.
My parents could be still alive.
I lost them when I was very young. No one knows what happened to them. I woke up early one morning to my sister, Kai, screaming and sobbing. The chief of the island said that they were no where to be found. No where to be found? How? Our island was so small. Ever since then Kai took full responsibility over me. She wasn't just a parent. She was a friend.
I wake up to Kai shaking me.
"Whaaat?" I groan.
"Plumeria! Wake up!" she whispers.
"It's not even sunrise yet! Let me sleep." I demand.
"We need to go. Now." her voice is now stern.
I get up and look into her eyes. Worry. She looks away and grabs a suit case which seems to have already been made.
"Huh? Kai, what is that for?"
"Don't worry about it." She sassed.
Something is up. Kai never sasses at me. I follow her and we head out to the main dock. Standing there is Akamai. He doesn't smile when he sees us, which is strange. Now I know something is really messed up.
"Is she ready?" Akamai says in a soft but stern voice.
"Yes, she is." Kai replies.
"What's going on? Ready for what? Can someone please explain-" Kai cuts me off.
"It's for your own good." She turns and hugs me tightly. She is now sobbing.
I stand there. Motionless. I look at Akamai over Kai's shoulder. His head is down and I see a single tear fall down his face. Akamai never cries.
"Kai, I don't know what's happening... And I know you won't explain, but... I trust you!" I say now bursting into tears.
"Good, because I can't explain. All I can tell you, is all you need to know." She says, backing away, grabbing my hands gently.
"You are heading to America. You are going to take this boat with Akamai to our neighboring island in Hawaii. Once you get there, Akamai will take you to the airport and you will get on a plane that will fly you straight to Los Angeles, California. Once you land, get a taxi and give him this address." She says handing me a piece of paper.
"Where does this address take me?" I ask.
"Do you remember an old friend of mine, who left the island about four years ago?" she asks.
"Begonia?" I say surprisedly.
"Yes! Begonia! She will be taking care of you once you arrive."
I nod. I feel better knowing I won't be alone, but I still don't understand why do I need to leave? And why isn't Kai leaving with me?
Akamai leads me to the small row boat and I get in. He starts rowing and we head off.
"Plumeria!" Kai screams, but I can barely hear her.
"I love you!" she yells.
"I love you too! Very much!" I yell back.
At this point I can no longer see Kai. I can't control the tears streaming down my face like an endless river. So many thoughts and uncertainties, I don't know how to deal with. My thoughts get cut off by the sound of the boat gritting against the rough sandy shore.
We had arrived in Hawaii.
I hadn't noticed that I had just crossed a quarter of the South Pacific Ocean. I feel bad for not giving Akamai company, but I honestly wouldn't know what to say. I felt, however, that he knew more than I did about all of this, and wasn't telling me.
