Uma comes into my room shortly after, looking refreshed and in comfortable clothes- black shorts, a navy top that falls off her shoulder and we sit in my bed going through the booklet together making comments here and there.
"I hate uniforms. Have you seen yours?" Uma groans, rolling her eyes. Then she digs in her small clutch she brought with her, "Would you mind if I vaped in your room? I'll put it in the lowest setting." Her hand paused inside the bag as she looks up for permission.
"It's cool." I nod and Uma winks at me before getting her vape out and fiddling with it before going to the window and opening it and taking a...vape? I don't really know the correct term here. My room starts to have a slight hint of cherries as she continues on.
"And no I've not looked yet, I'm fucking dreading it."
"We'll just have to convince them it's a terrible idea. My mother probably got it all the wrong size anyway- bitch." She sighs, the smoke leaving as she exhales. "Anyway, what's our timetables?" She changes the subject quickly, leaning against the windowsill looking at me with curiosity.
"I don't know, let me find them." Flicking through the booklet I find both our timetables and read them out, starting with Uma. "Ahem." I clear my throat.
"Uma Vanessa Hemmings-" She pulls a face as I say her full name. "You have Defence classes, Group Talk, English Literature, Sciences, Music and Photography as your lessons- you can look at times in a sec. Oh and it also says- 'curfew for all students to be out of Dorm Room is 10:30pm. Do Not be later unless with a genuine note. '"
"10:30?" She says in disbelief, voicing my thoughts. "Bloody babies have longer than that! What the Hell?" She rolls her eyes in exasperation. "What about you Lucie?"
I get my timetable out and read-
"Group Talk, English Literature, Myth History, Theatre studies, Dance and Defence classes every other week instead of Group- it's a smaller group."
"At least we're together at some point." Uma sighs. "I can already tell I'm not going to like these rules." She fiddles with the vape before it goes off and she puts it back in her bag. "Anyways, tomorrow is the official first day right..." There's a devious glint in Uma's eyes as the cogs in her mind work nine to a dozen working out whatever is on her mind. "We still have ages until curfew..."
"Yeaah..."
"Let's go to the party then."
"What party?"
Uma's head swings round to stare at me in disbelief. "That's a joke right?"
"No, I'm not, I've not heard of a party. I've just got here..."
"Clearly." She smirks at me, looking me up and down, before winking at me. " I'm kidding Lucie. Newbies always have parties to, like, introduce us to the school. "
"How'd you know?"
"I was invited. " she sings smugly, lying on my bed, her feet hanging off the edge. "We can walk with Eva as she's probably gonna go too. It's like a mandatory thing."
"It's Ava. And what if she doesn't go?" I correct, looking at her quizzically as she seems to have an answer for everything.
"We'll explore." I laugh her response, tipping my head back slightly as I do- it's good to laugh. But then I think about this party seriously, considering what happened at the last party I went to is what got me here in the first place and the laughter gets stuck in my throat.
"Uma...I don't think it's a good idea for me to go. I'm sorry, it's just the last party I went to...it was shit."
Uma is quiet for a moment or two in thought. "I'm sorry about that. We can go for an hour then come back- but it's important to go. I don't wanna go without you." She looks down and picks at her top. "I just want to see what kind of people I'm stuck with. I mean, I like you, and I'm glad I've got you here, but you're not in all my classes and all that." She peaks up at me, her voice sincere. "Just half an hour if that's really all you can do. But please come with me."
I can't say no to that because she's right, we need to have a rough idea who we're with in classes. It's only fair and it is a big deal...
"You promise we can go when I say so?" I check. As if she can sense me swaying on my decision , she nods vigorously with a smile.
"I promise."
"Okay I'll go with you. But I dunno what to wear." I groan.
