' Don't be a beach ' | Modern AU

I sighed as I flipped through TV channels. Nothing was on. At all. Just one of those days, I suppose. It really was a shame, to spend time on the couch like this, especially with it being summer. You'd expect to be out doing something fun with your loved ones but, nope, here I am, watching Tom and Jerry while my boyfriend is working. Of course, he would be, he always seemed to be determined to finish anything he has ever started, an I admire that. He's determined but I'm lonely.

I sat back and sighed before leaping up from the couch and going over to grab my phone. I scrolled through the contacts, looking for my boyfriend, before pressing the call button and putting it up to my ear. I waited and waited and waited, the tone dulling in my ears before he finally picked up.

"Hello?" I was planning to scold him but the sound of his voice made my heart stop. He sounded so tire. So drained. "Ma Belle?" I snapped out of my little state and put my hand on my hip.

"Where are you Gilbert?" I asked, trying to keep a soft tone. The other line was quiet, despite of few papers shuffling around. "Gilbert." I said again, losing my patience.

"Hold on." He whispered, "I have flash cards for this." I was about to speak up again before he cleared his throat and continued, "I am at work, working, like you do." I waited but he said nothing else.

"Did you lose your flash cards?" I asked him, not being able to keep a smile off my face.

"Perhaps." He grumbled, "I am sorry, (Y/N), I truly did mean to be home an hour ago but I got so caught up in work." I sighed, switching the phone between my two ears. I bit my lip and twirled my hair, trying to think of a compromise.

"Gilbert, it's summer, I graduated from college just last month. I thought we were going to go out and do something, celebrate!" I sighed, frustrated. "But we haven't. You haven't moved from that stupid desk in our room since last Thursday!" At that moment, I cringed at how loud my voice had gotten. I also realized that I was starting to sound a lot like Eliza when she spoke to her husband, Alexander.

I waited for anything from Gilbert but got nothing. "Eliza and Alexander have invited us out to go to the beach with them and their family." I whispered, "And I'm going. With or without you." Still nothing from him. Not even a grumble. However, listening more closely I could hear light snores. Had he fallen asleep on the phone? "Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier!" I yelled into the phone.

"I'm up!" I shook my head.

"Unbelievable. I miss you, is that not obvious!"

"(Y/N)..."

"No, no, save it. Stay at work, I don't care." And with that, I hung up. All my anger, all my loneliness spilled out into hot tears. I shook the tears away, forcing myself to suck it up, and go get packed for the beach. I wasn't going to accept Elizas' offer, but I had reconsidered. I wasn't going to wait around for him. Hopefully, I had time, since they were leaving today.

I ran upstairs, packing my clothes and getting my keys. Then I sent Eliza a quick text, told her to wait for me, and she said she would. After I got everything, I walked to the car and started it up, going to the Hamilton household. Once I got there, all eight of their children ran around. Philip the first, and the eldest, sat on the front porch, watching his younger siblings. Angelica, or just Angie, the second eldest sat with him. They both waved at me as I pulled up and I waved back once I got out of the car.

"Hello you two. Where's your parents." Philip opened his mouth to talk but his younger, ecstatic sister beat him to it.

"They're inside! Waiting for you! So is-"

"Angie, hush!" Philip scolded. She quickly clamped her mouth shut and didn't say another word. I gave them an odd look.

"Okay? Thanks." I said, walking past the two and the other children who had gathered around me to say hi. Before I walked inside, Alexander opened the door and pushed me back.

"Do me a favor, (Y/N), dear, watch the children." He said, smiling at me, almost urgently.

"Oh, but, I have to speak to Eliza-" I protested, though he didn't seem to care, as he called the youngest over and the youngest always had the most energy.

"Phil!" The young toddler looked over before running over to me and clinging to my leg. I smiled and picked him up.

"Alex, I-" I turned back to him but only got a door slammed in my face. Angie and Philip tried their best to hold in laughter as I grumbled to myself. Phil steadily giggled and messed with my hair. "What are you guys hiding?" I asked Phil.

"Auntie get married!" He clapped, sticking his tongue out. "Auntie (Y/N)!" My eyes widened at the boy before he way ripped out of my arms by a silent Philip.

Philip laughed, his nerves acting up, "Too much candy for the day, y'know? Drug for toddlers." He claimed before running off with the boy. Angie followed behind, and the other kids took the hint to follow.

The girl sighed, shaking her head, before turning back to the door and knocking once more. You could hear shuffling from the other side, hushed whispering, and something that sounded like glass breaking? Soon after the latter, Eliza opened the door with a bright smile on her face. "Hello, Y/N!" She greeted. blocking my view from the inside of her home. I squinted.

"Why is everyone hiding something from me?"

"Hiding? We're not hiding anything from you!" Again, I squinted.

"Fine! Alex stole your shoes!" Said mans head popped around the corner.

"What? No I didn't! That was you!"

Eliza chuckled, "Now, lets not point any fingers--"

"Guys." I said, drawing their attention to me, "What is going on?" They shared a look before they dragged me into the house. They closed the door and ran off. I sighed and sat down, letting the actions take its course. As I sat there, I paid no mind to the loud noises, nor did I pay nay mind to the dip in the couch next to me.

"Love." I turned quickly, coming face to face to my boyfriend. I jumed up.

"Gilbert!" I yelled, he flinched but smiled at me, "What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Uhm. I'm going to the beach with you?" He claimed, before lowering himself to his knees. I took a step back, watching as he pulled out a blackbox. He opened the box to show me the ring. "I also... have a very important question to ask you."

"Yes." I answered, drawing a laugh from him.

"I didn't even ask anything yet."

"I don't care, yes."
